Goat Curry A tale from a few years back,

for some long forgotten reason, we were walking back to Seven Sisters Tube station instead of travelling back via White Hart Lane Station.

It was a winters early evening ,and we decided to stop off for a beer before getting on the tube. From my youth i recalled a pub on the corner near Tottenham High Cross called The Swan ( locals may know the back story)
As we walked in i realised the customer base had change to one of a West Indian nature, and as we walked up to the bar, well, to say we felt uncomfortable within ourselves is not an understatement especially as what appeared to be several gunfire shots suddenly coming from the corner of the bar.
I turned around and saw that there were a group of guys just sitting there as if it was a natural thing, when it happened again, and my fears were allayed. The were playing dominoes and i have never ,before or since, seen dominos placed with such force. They must have put two and two together as all had big grins on their faces and nodded in our direction, to which we gratefully returned..
Got the pints and sat down, when the guvnors wife came down with a massive pot and started serving the domino boys. She walked up to us and enquired if we would like some goat curry... and it was free. to which we readily accepted. as it was a first time for anything, I have never tasted a curry like it, absolutely divine.
Having had a few mouthfuls i plucked up the courage to tell the guys how i thought there was a gunfight going on. They cracked up and we spent a good hour just chatting to them.

Paid a second visit a few months later with the same welcome from all, and the recalled our conversation. and asked us to sign a petition as there had been a lot of problems there and it could be in danger of closing. Readily put our names down followed by another bowl of goat.
Sadly the closure took place, but it will always be a place i fondly remember for the curry and the friendliness.

^ Good tale

I know exactly what you mean about the dominos - In "Little Havana" in Miami and also in Puerto Rico it seems local in both places like to play a "cracking" game of dominos

I think it is different to the horsemeat scandal as UK folks have an attachment to horses and view them more as pets.

Doubt most are bothered whether they eat goat or lamb.

Ah The Swan on the corner of Philip Lane, famous old pub dating back to the Middle Ages

It was a rough and tough old boozer towards the end and there were several violent incidents, stabbings and shootings there

It finally lost its licence in the mid 2000's following the shooting dead of a 17 year old girl at an unlicensed late night party

It was always the destination on the buses going to Tottenham and a big favourite with all the bus drivers from the depot across the road

And it was also famous for its dominoes games, the snap of which coils often be heard outside

I'm actually shocked by that news story. Apparently Kebab meat is supposed to be 70% lamb.

Yeah, but apparently it's often less than 10% and the rest is skin, gristle, fat and a bit of goat to top it off.

Not had one for over 25yrs....can't see me being tempted

I remember a scandal in the 1990's when I lived in Oxford that the local kebab vans were using pigeon meat in kebabs. Tasted okay to me at the time.

Not had a kebab for probably 20 years though......

well seeing as the majority of kebabs are probably eaten after a skinful, i doubt most would or have noticed.

I had one last weekend as id finished work late and didnt fancy awaiting a meal to cook, normally have one a month

The British are a peculiar race.

They'll eat cow but not horse.
They'll eat hen but not pigeon.
They'll eat deer but not dog.
They'll eat sheep but not goat.

It's all very odd.

Then they go out for some dodgy "street food" and don't give a damn what they're eating.

Plus the whole Sky Fairy fiasco with halal, kosher and all the rest of them. Oi, hands off my sacred cow!

I will. Pan-fried pigeon breast on black pudding with a bery and port wine reduction? yum

I am alright Jack

...I think many people would be horrified if the knew what was actually in some of the 'meat' products they love...

The only reason people eat kebabs when they're drunk is because they know it's not actual food and, if sober, they wouldn't be able to chew or swallow it.
