It must be my age but we go to Europe most years with the car - usually France and Italy - and I don't give any thought to breakdown cover but for some reason this year it's on my mind. What are people's view? Do you bother? Who's good?

We've never had any issues before so not sure why I'm thinking about it this year!

Sobering reminder of what £80 worth of cover could mitigate... much appreciated!

Yes, I do get breakdown cover abroad. Never had to use it but it can be v expensive to get recovery if you don't have cover.

Tjmely thread though, as our long trip car is now over 10yrs old so current provider - Start Rescue - won't cover it for European trips anymore. Any tips for alternatives gratefully received...

I've just got GreenFlag European Annual - £80. All the options I found were in the £80-£130 range for single trip or annual. How good any are in practice, who knows. I hope not to find out.

I think I've used RAC most times - I need to arrange it again for a trip later this year.

The key thing to me is that it includes returning the car home if it can't be fixed - not all do.

Have AA Euro breakdown cover on 3 of my cars. It will pay for itself several times over if I ever require recovery in France etc. Peace of mind.

I have RAC. Broke down in Slovenia in 2017 the day before we were due to return - 2011 Peugeot 3008

Called the RAC. Low loader arrived in 30 mins, transported to a Citroen garage. They reported that an injector needed replacing, part would be delivered next week.

RAC paid for a taxi for 5 of us from close to Tolmin to Ljubljana airport, flights home to Luton. Flight for me back to Slovenia the following week, and a taxi back to the garage. Cannot fault them.

Cost for the replacement was about £300 all in - should have had them all replaced as the others failed a few months later and I had to pay UK rates for labour. The local garage could have charged me any figure that came into their head.

Consider a packaged bank account. Virgin Money’s Club M account includes European breakdown through green flag. I worked out costs and for me it was the same as annual travel and UK only breakdown cover, so I gained European cover and gadget cover at basically no extra cost.

We have nationwide flex. Worldwide annual travel insurance, European breakdown cover and gadget insurance costs £21 a month.

Nationwide tend to give a payout to customer of £100 each. It’s a joint account so we get £200.

Basically it costs £40 a year.

Really good value on pre existing conditions too.

I was going to say the same. Worth investigating as overall the benefits are a bargain.

ETA. The uk breakdown cover is AA and I think the top cover, it includes a hire car for example.
