Letters in the lawn
Discussion
I'm no gardener but I do keep the ranges cut and neat at my shooting club.
During a recent work party we had a huge bonfire that killed all the grass underneath. So far, so good.
Obviously it's going to need re-seeding but I thought it might be fun to see if I could put some letters in the new grass.
I haven't given any thought to how I would lay out 4 letters, each about a foot high but I wondered if there was a way I could do it so it could be walked on and mown in the usual way.
I can't do it in flowers because it would need weeding and those buggers will just walk over it rather than round it.
Any suggestions on how to make the letters stand out amo get the normal grass, please?

I'm guessing family initials rather than you being under an airport flight path and starting with a C and ending in a T?
Interesting question about how to make stand out. Sorry I can't help with that but will be interested to see other replies now my comment has bookmarked your post!

Whatever you plant will probably spread over time & just look untidy. You could plant something like clover but the letters are unlikely to stay distinct for long.
Thank you. That's exactly the answer I was expecting and half hoping to get.I'll just re-seed it and leave it at that.
Thanks again.
Thanks to everyone else.
I'll give the C..T idea a bit of thought though.

I'm sure someone on here drew a large cock and balls on their fathers lawn with fertilizer/ miracle grow which resulted in that part of the lawn growing much thicker and a deeper shade of green.
Failing that could you use a different strain of grass seed?
Mate of mine lived next to a large park, he had a chunk of land and had a sit on mower, he'd occasionally drive the mower from his back gate onto the park and cut a large cock and balls into the grass on the park, like 50ft long hoping it could be seen from planes/helicopters etc.Failing that could you use a different strain of grass seed?

Only thing I can think of that might be useful is to leave templates out and heavily fertilise inside them so that the grass comes through thicker and greener shortly afterwards.
Yeah, you can see fairy rings even when the toadstools aren't up because the nutrients are different. Using a nitrogen rich feed would work and wouldn't be as permanent if you decide against it longer term.Years ago some kindly soul let their dog have a very severe bout of diarrhoea at the edge of my front garden. There was no way I was attempting to pick that mess up so left it for nature to take its course with rain and sun over a few weeks. After that I had the thickest greenest grass in that small area that I’ve ever had on a garden. Not sure I’d recommend liquid dog s
t everywhere as I’m sure it’ll be a major health hazard, but any sort of heavy fertiliser would have a similar effect.

Bit off topic but Hengrove Park in South Bristol used to be the site of an old airport/airfield. After warm weather you can still see the outline of the identity marking on the grass - a giant 'Bristol' within a big circle - surprisingly clearly. No idea how it was marked out but it's interesting that it's so visible 90 or so years later
