Trains in Italy

Last time i went on a train in Italy we bought paper tickets the day before and validated them when we got on the train.
Nowadays can you buy tickets online and keep them on your phone? Travelling from Bologna to Venice
Another vote for the TrenItalia app, I find it much easier to use than the kiosk, you can see in advance if there are multiple options (there can be a fast train option) to the same destination etc. You can also see the amount of seats remaining although in real life I don't think it means anything. Paper tickets must be validated on the platform, otherwise you will be fined if asked to show your ticket(s). At the enterance to each platform you will see a little machine on the wall. You stamp or scan your tickets you just purchased to validate them. I didn't need to do this with the purchasing digital tickets.
Keep an eye out for any late platform changes, a few times we had to make a dash under the track to another platform but apart from that we found the italian trains to be very good, great value and surpisingly good at time keeping.

Re ticketing and the need for pre validation at the station on day of travel, many larger stations have the validation machine on each platform. They are yellow as I recall.Paper tickets must be validated on the platform, otherwise you will be fined if asked to show your ticket(s). Also, a great feature of the Italian system is that each train is numbered, and that number is repeated on the tickets, the outside of the trains, the platform indicators etc. This means it is really easy to find the platform, train etc.

Another vote for trainline. I've just used it the last few times i've been.
At easter we went as a family, and we took trains from Pisa to Rome, Rome to Pompeii, and then back to Naples (on different days). We purchased the tickets either as we walked up to the station if we were unsure about times, or the day before travel.
