Cataloging Proposal Recommendations

Not sure that this might be the correct forum but here goes.
I've been asked by a charity to develop a cataloging proposal for a small international traveller's collection that comprises:
- physical objects measuring as long as 2.5 meters (spears!) to small ring sized objects
-large maps and newspaper/magazine coverage
-diaries
-travel documentation like flight tickets etc
-pictures, slides, negatives
The actual photography/scanning issue is not my problem.
A general question, is there a "standard" somewhere for cataloging such a wide ranging collection or is it necessary to have a different cataloging schema for each type of item?
Would appreciate input from anyone with experience of this type of project.
