Any thoughts on the reliability of the above?

I'm trying to buy a car for my son and had been looking at VW Up's, Seat Mii's and Skoda Citigo's. A QV Line version of the Mito has become available not far from home and looks fantastic - full leather, media system, bright red, reasonable insurance and within budget. My lad's head has officially been turned, but I'm a bit worried about big bills !!!

They're actually very durable BUT they need to have had the correct oil put in when service & the chains need changing around the 100k mark.

They're a great choice check the history.

Thanks, I think you'd recommended the Mito 1.4 on another thread that I'd started - my lad's eyes almost popped out of his head when he realised he could get an Alfa Romeo. I just wasn't sure about the Twin air.

The red one has unfortunately gone, but he's now fallen in love with a single owner black one from a trader. Thanks for the heads up on the timing chain - it's done 98,000 and they have no record of it being done. Don't suppose you know how much it would cost to get done at a normal garage? I'll head off to Google and see if I can get an estimate myself.

I'd have to disagree with the above. My parents have one (the 1.4) and it's been catastrophically unreliable, with very regular problems.

My nephew has one as do two of his friends (1 twin air & 2 1.4's) with no issues in three years.

You can normally hear if the chain needs doing but it's something to assume you'll need to get done during your sons ownership, my son ended up with a 1.4 N/A Astra as we couldn't get a sensible insurance number on the Mito it still irks him now.

Cheers will have a listen when we go to look at it tomorrow. Insurance is coming out at £900 fully comp having only passed a few weeks ago which doesn’t seem too bad.

One thing that’s put us off the Up’s / Mii’s / Citigo’s is the number of them with rust around the petrol filling cap. Seems to be quite a common issue.

I bought a very cheap 1.4 16v for my lad 2 years ago, it was absolutely filthy but had recent matching tyres and a full, clean mot which i took as a good sign. The plan was for him to use it for his summer break from Uni, and then push it through a local auction.

The car really got under our skin and he ended up taking it back to uni. It then suffered a couple of electrical issues probably related to the loom in the tailgate. All part of the alfa experience. Just before its mot was due again it became apparent there were a few jobs that needed doing - brakes , snapped road spring, dual mass flywheel causing nasty vibration. The boy was quite keen to do the jobs and we nearly did until I found a nice specced 2018 twin air with low miles in the same colour. So deal done and old one off to wbac for £250!
Old one in foreground, new one behind

Great little cars, i love taking it for a spin when he will let me!

I’ve had a Twin Air Mito for the last 3 and a half years.

No issues, but you absolutely must make sure it’s serviced on time with the correct oil.

I’ve posted on a number of topics that we’ve had a Mito 1.3 JTDM for over 11 years with a mileage approaching 120k. Currently used by my 20 year old daughter who loves it. Apparently there quite a cool car for a young person.

I have it serviced every 7k miles and have changed the gearbox oil every 40k.

Cheers all. The 2nd one we were going to look at sold just as we were about to set off yesterday. In hindsight we should have used the Autotrader feature to reserve it overnight, you live and learn.

Hopefully off to pick up a Skoda Citigo this afternoon (which we reserved). It's the sensible choice as the insurance is around £300 cheaper, but bloody hell the Mito QV's we'd seen did look bloody lovely for the money.

Be careful. Any teenager that wants an Alfa Mito and ends up with a Skoda Citigo will make Kevin the Teenager look like a well balanced, reasonable lovely human being. I’d hold out for the Alfa.

Fortunately it's me who wants to hold out for an Alfa, he's absolutely in love with the Skoda - it's a special Black Edition with black alloys and blacked out windows. I'd pick the Alpha over the Skoda in a heartbeat, but then again I've bought some dogs in the past - an MX5 with rusty arches was not my finest hour nor the Mini R53 JCW which needed a new clutch and flywheel. He's clearly more sensible than me.

My recommendation would be to run as far away as you can from that engine! We had one and literally no one would replace the timing chain. Apart from one mechanic. Who fked it up. We then had to put on eBay for spares and repair... bought by a firm who 'knows this engine' and even they couldn't get it going again, so it ended up as scrap.

A shame actually, because otherwise, in the 4 years we had it, it was pretty reliable!

Narrow it down a bit, are you talking about the Mito or the Citigo?

I presume the Mito, as Citigo's have a belt.

Oh yes, sorry, I didn't see that the conversation changed to a Citigo. It was actually a Fiat we had, but obviously same engine.
