Hi All,

I'm looking for something to make weeding flower beds and lawns easier. Are tools like this any good and can anyone recommend one?

There's quite a few variations of the design. I saw a video of a Spear & Jackson one being used and it looks like it takes out a big clod leaving a hole for filling.

The last couple of garden tools I bought on a whim (garden vac and weed burner) were both useless, so I thought I'd ask this time!

I bought one the other day. Impulse buy from a Facebook ad. Can't even tell you which one I bought. Email purchase confirmation came from a company called Wantcharm.

It works but does pull up a lump of soil with the root. I'm telling myself this is bonus aeration and will hopefully close in itself.

Don't these weed pullers assume that the roots go straight down? As such would they pull out all the weed root or leave some behind which can then resprout?

I use the Resolva type lawn weed stuff on mine (other brands are available). It takes a while to work but it seems to knock the weeds back effectively.

I have one of these - I bought it 6 years ago. Very good for pulling weeds out of lawns - same as the Fisker one, pretty much.

I have a variation of the fiskar one. It's ok on big rooted weeds but does nothing on smaller leafy weeds.

The design fault on these is that the jaws don't close immediately but are activated gradually as you lever backwards. This doesn't work if the weed is shallow, small or doesn't have a big enough root for the jaws to close around until they are almost out of the ground. You just get jaws full of a few leaves instead.

It also relies upon the surrounding ground being flat, otherwise the lever will prematurely be activated when you dig the jaws into the ground and so will close them before they get a chance to grip onto the weed.

Thanks All. I just spent about an hour watching people pull up weeds on youtube. It's between the Spear & Jackson one or the Gardena, which is the one I showed in my OP coincidently. The Gardena one works by twisting and pulling up, rather than levering.
