Relaxation of Russian Sanctions
Discussion
The Government are allowing diesel and Jet A-1 to be imported from other countries (Turkey and India) which have been refined from Russian crude oil.
At the same time, they are banning future exploration of oil and gas from the North Sea. Over the last couple of years, 2 refineries that produce diesel and Jet A-1 have closed.
I despair for both the lack of joined up thinking on energy supplies but also the impact on Ukraine, even if it is not a huge amount of money but the symbology. .

The mid terms in the US should fix some of the issues we are currently suffering. Assuming that the Democrats can take both houses Donald's will be a lame duck president for the rest of his term. We wouldn't have needed to import fuel if Trump hadn't decided to end the Iran deal and then invade Iran off the back of it.
State owned energy producer might seem like a good idea at the moment, but when everything gets back to normal it will be just be another costly expense that will need to be offloaded.
None of that is good for Ukraine, but then Trump doesn't really care about Ukraine or Europe.

refined product from russian crude was always coming in through turkey and russia anyway right from the start of the ukraine war so in many ways it's just dropping the pretence of giving a damn i suppose.....
Can you provide a source for this?Just heard a bloke on Radio 4 explaining that India HC products were allowed here till April so the 'ban' has only been in full force for a few weeks. Still, the optics look bad.

one probably will also find that a rather 'relaxed' view was taken about how and where reliance or similar from india sourcing feedstock for refined product... if one chooses to work the system, it seems there are various ways and means to get around the existing supposed 'ban' that was in line with what the EU had done last year iirc (similarly unenthusiastically enforced...).
the (large) increase of refined product from india since ukraine 2022 to the UK/EU where india are heavy buyers of russian crude tells it's own story about just how determined people have been re excluding russian oil....
On BBC news this morning some Gov't lackey was trying to excuse explain this by saying they had now sanctioned more Russian shadow fleet ships.
So what does sanctioning these ships actually achieve, how many have they actually intercepted/stopped?
Is it like the joke about Police shouting 'Stop or I'll shout stop again'?

Not surprised. It would be good if the Government were simply honest about the situation. If aviation fuel supplies are genuinely tight, say so openly rather than quietly allowing Russian-derived fuel in through third countries. We cannot endlessly talk about standing with Ukraine while still funnelling money into Putin’s war economy via loopholes. Personally, I would rather pay more for flights, or even fly less, than pretend this is somehow morally different because the crude passed through Turkey or India first.
