Just come through Heathrow T5 and the luggage system failed with no luggage coming through the carousel. They told us over the tannoy it wouldn’t be coming through today, to go home and log it as delayed luggage in ba.com. We’ve done all that and made a list of all contents which will probably total £1000 to replace. They said they will be couriered to us in the next couple of days. If it doesn’t arrive what’s the likelihood of getting compensated for the full amount? Or is it like car insurance where it’s marked down and you only get a proportion of the replacement cost.

Luggage is only considered permanently lost after 21 days, if it cannot be found. They will want receipts etc if you need to claim

So if I haven’t got receipts, which I won’t have for most of it, I won’t get compensated?

BA lost/forgot to put on the plane our child seat a few years ago. At Heathrow they gave us a brand new one to get home in. Then around 24 hours later there was a knock on the door and someone had couriered our original lost seat to us for Heathrow (140 miles or so). Couldn’t fault it really

They haven’t lost it. It’s stuck at Heathrow because the carousel failed. It’ll turn up.

Emirates left my suitcase in Dubai the last time we flew home. Logged it at Melbourne and it appeared a couple of days later by courier.

However, now I take pics on my phone of the checked bags so I can provide them if one goes awol.

My luggage was left in Paris last time I flew to LHR with BA. I knew as soon as I landed because I could see the airtag in my suitcase had pinged recently at CDG.

I was pretty annoyed as I was due to get on another flight 2 days later and didn't have time to replace all my stuff. I shared the airtag with BA and their handling agent and I had my suitcase by 2pm the following day, so in plenty of time. I just needed to expedite my laundry a little which was annoying. The handling agent sent plenty of updates once the luggage had been located and the airtag meant I knew where my suitcase was at any given time so I wasn't too stressed.

This.

Last time this happened to me (luggage got left in Madrid due to a short stopover), it was delivered to my home the next day.

You can get four days out of the pair you are wearing. The others might have turned up by then.

BA are usually pretty good with that sort of thing. My bag didn't make the connection when travelling to Indianapolis via Chicago (BA/AA), annoying as I had arrived in Indianapolis at 10pm so no meds and night stuff. Called BA and was assured my bag would be with me asap, it was, it arrived at the hotel at 3am!!

They'll want receipts for any expensive items that you claim are lost, but that can be a credit card transaction or similar that hopefully will be locatable.

But they won't want receipts for normal clothing. If you just give accurate info (5 pairs of M&S pants, £30), that won't be an issue.

Also flew out of T5 yesterday and no luggage which was the same for about 3/4 of the passengers. Been shopping this morning to have essentials and something to wear. No doubt will turn up but might be a while with all the carnage at T5.

Most put barcode stickers on as well as the label around the handle.

I always make sure they are stuck down well as they slap them half on.

I have bought Apple AirTags to go inside my hold bags.

If it is lost at least you have a chance of seeing where the bag is, and telling the airline.

It's always a relief when in baggage reclaim knowing your bag made it to destination on your phone.

I worked as a ski rep many years ago and luggage was delayed occasionally. When the clients called their insurance they were simply told to go shop for what you need to carry on your holiday. No receipts needed (seriously, who has ANY of the receipts for anyof their luggage contents?!). No "mark-down" due to age of clothes either - this isn't car insurance ;-)

The luggage always turned up later BTW.
