Advice please..........im thinking of selling both my cars and getting an M5. My tin top is a saxo VTS and my weekend toy is a caterham seven.
Both together have a joint value of about 21,500- 23,000 pounds..........so its got me thinking!
Ive been looking at the E39 M5 and for this sort of money i could get a 2000-2001 plate with under 50,000 miles and FBSH. (obviously with warranty)
Ive had an insurance quote of about 950-1000pounds(fully comp). Not bad i think for a 25yr old!
I do about 9,000 miles per year so what sort of service intervals should i expect? i take it it depends on how you drive it? oh and how much is a years BMW cover?
Kind regards.

You've done incredibly well to get such low insurance given your age and the car itself.
It's bloody superb and I'm finding it gets better the more you abuse it, quite forgiving with 'traction off' ito being easy to provoke and catch.
In fact, I suspect more committed drivers eat tyres with a similar apetite to it's fuel gulpage, in which respect it is truly ruinous.
Recent, painful experience has persuaded me the dealers see you as a bigger than nornmal meal ticket so it's probably a cunning plan to locate a decent specialist indy spannerist.
Other than that, go right ahead, there was a guy on PH's classifieds selling an utterly sublime, special order estoril blue example - with all the trimmings - for (I think) £27k.
{Come to think of it, a mate who's a biker of a weekend has just taken the plunge and he is constantly ringing me up, waxing lyrical like an automotive Jesuit.}

The Nicasil issue only applies to early 6 cylinder E39s and not to the V8 lump (called S62) in the M5.
These are great cars and a used performance bargain IMHO.

Whats the nicasil issue?
Nikasil.
It's a material used to line the cylinder bores on some engines. Reacts unfavourably with Sulphur (in the days when the Sulphur content of gasoline was higher), causing degradation of the liner, resulting in a loss of compression and thus power.
BMW replaced some affected engines out of the kindness of their hearts.
Lots of info to be had via Google.
