Chris Harris on Cars - The Howl (Thruxton, 6th June)
Discussion
I thought as it's just a few weeks away I'd see if anyone else was going?
With my car I've always wondered whether I should remove the exhaust (aftermarket that it came with) so that I could do track days. This lets me find that out which will be nice. I've always wanted to attend a podcast too. Should also be passenger laps for those there on drivers tickets too.
How do garages work at Thruxton, are there any and do you normally book them?
I'll be there in my 2016 R8 V10+ with noisy exhaust.
Anyone who has been before who has a favourite track guide let me know. There are a lot of old ones with questionable camera work. I've done track days before, but never Thruxton.

My pockets are not quite deep enough for the track day tickets. I also very much expect that my modified (BBR 225) Mx5 would be out of it's depth at such a fast track with the cars that are likely to be there (your R8 being a typical example).
I have got spectator tickets and am going with my brother.
Where are you travelling from?
I will keep an eye out for your R8 on track.
There is very little information regarding what time the track day starts and what time the evening activities finish. Can anyone shed any light?

What do you mean remove the exhaust ?Apart from it being a big job on the R8 to remove / refit (I've done it many times), there still needs to be an exhaust fitted, you can't just leave the manifolds blasting into the engine bay.

Basically do what you did. It has a quicksilver on it. I want to know whether I enjoy driving it on track enough for it to be worth changing the quicksilver out for the standard exhaust so I can do noise restricted days elsewhere (e.g. 105db days at Goodwood).
Yep, i'm going with son in law so will be in the M3 Touring and V6 Ftype.
The price did appear high until you realised it was for 2 people and 2 cars so £500/day each.
Looking forward to it - went to the first CH trackday last year and it was great, albeit on one of the hottest days of the year which did affect tyre wear somewhat.
Event last time started with morning briefing around 8am, on track by 9am. Lunch 1-2, then track time until 430 as they were doing the podcast from 5.
I believe the event goes well into the evening, specific timetable not available yet.

Bad wording on my part.

Ahhh. Got ya! . The Quicksilver is epic, if I didn't do trackdays, there is no way I'd have taken it off. Basically do what you did. It has a quicksilver on it. I want to know whether I enjoy driving it on track enough for it to be worth changing the quicksilver out for the standard exhaust

Garages - no garages as such, there is a paddock or between sessions you can park adjacent to the pits. Plenty of space. You get a track talk as part of the safety briefing, and everyone goes out in a convoy at the beginning of the session to learn the circuit.
It's fast and flowing, lots of grip (in fact its the most abrasive circuit in the UK so can wear tyres really quickly), and the trick is keeping a high average speed rather than attacking every corner.
Think i've done about 6 track days there now, plus some instruction.
Most people share tyre pressure gauges/pumps so you can lower/raise as necessary too. There is a petrol pump on site but it's pricey, local alternative 10-15 mins away, so fill up on route as close as possible.

Yeah, I love it on the road, it really makes the car. On the Gen 2 it's especially funny as you can hear it switching between the banks when in RS3 mode (5cyl de-activation mode) on the motorway. Gives a little toot as it does it. Consumables are going to be quite high, so I'm going to need to enjoy it quite a lot. I don't need more than 6/10 on a trackday to enjoy myself, so lets see where we land with this.

Thanks for the tips, much appreciated. You get a track talk as part of the safety briefing, and everyone goes out in a convoy at the beginning of the session to learn the circuit.

I'll look out for you and your son in law. If you see a grey gen 2 R8 come and say hi! I'll be brimming it at the local Shell/Tesco/Esso that's nearest to the circuit, and will do the same at lunch too.
