Jaguar confirms 'Type 01' name for production

We knew Type 00 was just the concept tag - we didn't know just how close it was to showroom reality...


As discussed just last week on PH, Jaguar has never really been known for exceptional nameplates. Their cars may have rivalled everything from Quattroportes to Exiges, but Jaguar names themselves haven’t tended to be particularly evocative. Historically speaking, the brand has generally let the ground-breaking model underneath do the talking, its history littered with examples of letters that have since become instantly recognisable based on their close proximity to a chromed big cat. 

Well, you might not see much of the latter in the coming months, but Jaguar has opted to (sort of) stick with tradition when it came to the job of naming its 1,000hp+ mega EV: the car we've previously been referring to as the Type 00 will now come to market as the Jaguar Type 01. 

While that might disappoint anyone hoping for something as unorthodox as the car itself, the logic doesn’t take very much explaining. ‘Type’ has been a Jaguar thing since the C-Type of 1951, and its most valuable and famous machines are sports cars wearing the moniker. Meanwhile, the ‘0’ is a signifier of zero exhaust emissions, and ‘1’ represents the first of a new generation - simple as that.

Naturally it builds on the huge amount of internet coverage already generated by the concept - so much so that one wonders what other names were workshopped before JLR opted to keep things nice and simple - but also points to a naming convention (Type 02, 03 etc) that can be conveniently applied to future models as Jaguar's EV era takes hold. We won't dwell on the manufacturer's less-than-inspiring choice of font here (differing opinions welcome, as ever), but for reference, the badge you pictured is from where the bonnet meets the windscreen, apparently a ‘signature of future Jaguar’. 

All of which means, of course, that we aren’t far from seeing the finished production car - what a nice quiet day on the internet that’ll be. Camo’d Type 01 prototypes will be at Monaco this week - exactly the sort of place Jag will be hoping to sell a few - ahead of the Formula E weekend, with the full thing to be revealed later in 2026, most likely September if the scuttlebutt is to be believed.

Jaguar’s MD, Rawdon Glover, said: “We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind!’”

01 ....Groundbreaking...
I assume they paid an agency millions to come up with something that adds zero value to the car.
Are they going to make the Polestar mistake of naming them in the order they come out which means nothing to the public?

I wonder if they're naming that as it's the "first" (like Polestar) or if 01 is meant to signify the highest model, which is opposite to general convention but they said they weren't going to copying anybody....

I think it looks great, and is the right direction for them. Jag were always a poor relation to Mercedes and BMW unfortunately. Time to try something more radical.

My big concern for this car is that they're selling into a disappearing market - and it's nothing to do with electricity. The prestige sports saloon is vanishing; the CLS has gone, the A7 is going, the 8-series will be next. The Rapide (my "when the company sells" car) never made a dent, leaving only the Porsche standing. That kind of suggests that the market for that kind of low-slung four-door tourer is about the same size as Panamera sales, i.e. not very big. Note that this is about sports saloons not fast saloons - I'm sure the M5 does great guns, but it had a roof height that's about as tall as my wife, so it doesn't count. The 01 should be about six inches shorter, which is more like it.

I know it sounds silly, but I also think they shouldn't have gone for a three syllable name that's difficult to shorten. Everybody shortens names to one syllable (Merc) or two (BM), even with model names - everyone said XJ not XJ6, long before the company followed suit. Maybe we'll all call it the "type one", but that makes the zero looks odd and superfluous.

Also, I do hope they sort out the odd tiny window on the back door, which just looks silly.

Typo One seems perfectly apt for jaGuar.

Stupid name and endless wait aside, I look forward to the cover being ripped off and the embargo to expire. I'm quite encouraged by what's been alluded to by those who've had the pleasure. No desire to own it, but look forward to hearing about it.

I’m getting a bit bored by the endless hype for a car we all know is going to be a complete flop.

I look forward to seeing one try to fit in a U.K. sized parking space.

Surely the AMG GT 4 Door fits pretty well into this category. It feels like they’re quite similar in concept and launch timing wise will be pretty close too.

I was surprised Chris Harris and co were allowed to give so much away about the drive on their podcast, which they all enjoyed. Interesting to see the wraps come off but after that couldn't be more 'meh' about it if I tried

The branding is very Polestar. A brand that’s succeeded in the same sectors that Jaguar has, so far, failed.

I suppose the natural competitor for this will be the Polestar 5. Make a good twin test.

Reimagined for the future by taking inspiration from the past….

I think what we need is much more marketing rhetoric (which contradicts what it said before)

Its not like Jaguar dont have previous for using the word "Type" then a letter, so a number with Type after it, doesnt seem so odd to me.

The "01" bit, well maybe they are just some good ol boys, never meaning no harm....

"It wont fit in a parking space", no it doesnt, what you want dear chap is called an X Type, or maybe a Kia Piccanto wink this splits the different between Standard and Long wheelbase versions of the previous XJ, and it is a little bit wider. It is fairly massive but it is sort of going for a sort of Rolls lite market.

It’s all very well comparing this to models built by other brands e.g. Merc or Polestar but the key difference is those aren’t the only models sold by those brands or they have a huge Chinese parent at the back.

jaGuar have put all of their eggs in a very niche basket that they previously haven’t used. It’s a massive gamble and one I have a feeling is going to lead to them failing and becoming a badge slapped on “luxury” versions of Chinese EV tat.
