Sir David Attenborough s 100th
Discussion
Couldn’t see a thread anywhere about Sir David reaching the grand old age of 100.
Watched the birthday celebration at the Royal Albert Hall on TV last night, which had snippets of his best moments on TV.
I’m too young to really remember Life on Earth, but the Blue Planet and Blue Planet 2 were real watershed moments in nature TV, made all the better with his narrative.
In short, what a life he’s had so far, and what a wonderful human being.

I watched it too. Doesn't look 100 does he.
Not sure what relevance some of the music had, but I assume it must have been. The harp player was amazing, but went on for ages, I'd rather have seen more video footage of Attenborough instead, but I then the event was for him, more than it was for me.
As a kid in the early 80's I remember my grandad had the Life on Earth encyclopaedia which I loved looking at when I visited. Back then it gave a glimpse into another world, one that wasn't as accessible as it is now.
Pleased to hear there is to be a Blue planet 3 later this year.
There isn't really anyone who could ever replace Attenborough is there.

Enjoyed the tribute last night, and as others have said he has been an ever present in my life.
Interesting story at the start that his first presenting role in Zoo Quest was accidental, because the intended presenter took ill. A touch of good fate.
In the unlikely event I get to 100, I hope I’m in such good shape.

He's got to be the only person in the UK that literally everyone likes. Even most "national treasures" have their detractors.
What a guy!
Plus he's perhaps the only famous person who I absolutely believe doesn't have any skeletons in the cupboard. I say that as you never really know with other celebrities these days, but Sir DA is someone you can depend on to actually be the person you perceive them to be - professional, genuine and a true British gentleman. What a guy!

Not everyone. From the Unpopular Opinions thread:A500leroy said:
Attenborough don't deserve all the fawning over hes getting.
Rich man gets a job he likes, gets millions of pounds to do it and travel the world, probably at the license fee payers expense, has a lovely life and lives to an old age.
Why we celebrating someone who's gamed the system?

If he fronts it it is usually a sign its something good. Having said that you would think he filmed it all on his own the way people bang on.
No wonder they started to put those how we did it bits at the end of the shows. I actually dont like that bit. I suspect a lot of the drama of the animal world is manufactured.
Still 100 and kicking.

Ahh yes, Leroy the edgelord.
What's also impressive is just what a bunch of risktakers he and his crew were in previous eras. Facing down crocodiles and elephant seals armed with nothing more then a broom handle, endless run ins with border officials and military, and so on.
And then consider that his main era of wildlife programmes started when he was in his 50s, after he had been at the helm of almost every TV breakthrough of the era.
What. A. Man.

One of the few left of a generation that cared more about the world than themselves .
I don’t think there’s many that have the good standing that DA has .
A real legend and one that will never be replaced .
All of his documentaries have been of the highest production quality and show what it’s possible to produce when you really mean it .

Approaching and being accepted by those gorillas deserves admiration in itself, which kind of helps negate the claim that he has 'gamed the system'.
As for being manufactured, I've often thought that you could create and narrate any story you wanted with a group of animals simply by the way you edit the clips together, but I blank that from my mind and just enjoy his programmes.
