China is the new superpower...

...that's what I think. Today they've launched their second manned space mission, they're making stuff better and cheaper, the economy is growing massively, they have nukes, a huge population, and they're buying major wesrern institutions.
Amazingly, the blend of communism and capitalism is dynamic.

Well not quite yet, in 15-20 years time Chnia will be the world super power yes. It's well on the way though.
I can see 4 contenders for the next world war China, USA, India and Japan.
I reckon it'll end up as USA/Japan versus China with Taiwan as the spark, and India getting dragged in on the side of US/Japan ( probably seeing an opportunity to grab the water resources in the Himalayas from China/Tibet ).

Within 10 years 98% of clothes sold in the UK will be made in China.
It will become the manufacturing centre of the world without doubt.
And then when the West has virtually no manufacturing capacity, the prices will start to rise...

Indonesian sweatshops cannot compete with the cost of labour in China.
Consider that for a minute.

Until their labour charges get undercut by somewhere else. You can't get richer without side effects.
Well isn't part of the reason that they are so dominant is their cheap prices because their currency is undervalued (being a controlled currency) which the US is lobbying rather hard to get them to change.
Remember Japan started out the same way, making cheap crappy products, now look at it, their stuff is relatively expensive (or at least priced mid range) and high quality.

I went there in 1996. Drove from Shenzen to Dongguan to visit some factories. In every village we went through it seemed that they were building about 12 skyscrapers. Bamboo scaffolding everywhere!
And they have a fantastic work ethic.
Within 50 years they will be THE superpower IMO.

I cant see a war happening between china and the US, I could see a cold war type scenario, but not a full scale battle.
The US has a lot to lose if they were to jepordise their relationship with the eastern superpower.
Russia is also a very close allie of china, as china is their number one purchaser of weapons and oil.
The Taiwan thing is more rooted in history, China doesnt need Taiwan, thats a given, but if they lose China, it will pave way for other bits wanting out of the PRC.
China has seen what happened to Russia, and they will not allow a precursor to trigger a similar scenario in their nation.
The US had written the doctorate of 'divide and conquer' and I'm sure many behind-the-scene actions instigate a majority of the problems in the far-east. Sad but true, democracy can only work if ALL lick one anothers balls now and again, and I respect China for staying put, I mean how the hell can a democracy control a nation of over 1.2 billion people???? China will be no more but a number of smaller nations if democracy was to pervail.
Like someone said earlier, its a dynamic system, and will get better, their human rights records are getting better, their legal system is being re-vamped and their overall fair-trade values are being looked into. They're trying their best to join the world of fairness and opportunity... they just need support and guidance, not the kind of accusations the US government sometimes throws at them, we cant alienate our far-eastern brothers, I for one could not imagine paying 5 times the cost for every electronic gadget I buy!
All my opinion...

Well the capitalism bit is anyway.
China's growth has been driven by foreign investment and small private firms.
The state sector is suffering from severe problems and, despite rapid growth, their banking system is in serious trouble.
Whether their rapid growth will continue far into the future depends on how effectively they tackle the structural problems they face.

Just a thought, but I'm thinking their rise to "world domination" has been too rapid. We talk about the labour market, as yes it's huge and cheap. However, what happens (just an example)if a minimum wage is introduced.... Economy, belly and up spring to mind.
Or if natural resources become a thing of the past.
My guess is that this will be, relatively speaking, short term...And then it'll be someone else's turn.........Old Blighty the next Superpower??!!

I suppose economically places tend towards an equilibrium if left to their own devices (i.e. If you don’t supply people with an easy lifestyle while out of work or over tax), from the people I have worked with and studied with who are Chinese (and I would make the same observations about other southeast Asians as well) they certainly have a very good work ethic and the ones I have met area socially very conservative in most respects which I must admit I greatly admire.
Wonder if Ted will have to open up a new place in the regional section eventually if PHers go to China or we have an influx? Think of the automotive possibilities with an expanding infrastructure, cheap petrol and German companies manufacturing cars there now (Admittedly they still have some catching up to do to get from old VW’s to modern Mercedes).

I thought HSBC was going to buy up everything in China now? With that kind of service they are doomed
lol, from what I understand (other half is from beijing), china has multiple growth analysis systems in place which are adapating and process re-engineering... they know the pitfalls and the weaknesses, there is a big difference between the chinese intellect and the rest of the world, they prepare well in advance... they spent 1000's of years in civil wars, and then 100's of years of trying to control the people, to get a system in place, etc etc, then the world wars took place and they were always held back.
They've learnt from their weaknesses, they have now ammassed one of the worlds largest ammunition supplies behind the states and russia, and their Technical Military Division or it translates to something like this is very secretive of its technology, which is the real fear most western countries have, we just dont know exactly how far they are in technical terms militarily, we only have what the central intelligence has been able to gather, and we know how useful they are with the iraq can-of-worms...
China's here to stay, most definitely... they're not doing it for their glory, they're in it for the longer term plan... slightly different agendas to what russia went through decades ago...
The space race is upon us again, I dont know, maybe a few more decades and Total Recall type Mars outpost scenes might be commonplace? 3 breasts anyone? lol
