Hi all

The dormers on our house need some work - they were last replaced some 27 years ago when the roof was redone. I've got £700-worth of black Cedral in my garage which I've had for about 3-4 years, waiting to be put to good use. I've used it on the front of the garage and it still looks superb five years on. Has anyone done similar to this and if so would the experienced among you get some proper scaffolding in ... or hire a tower and do each one using that?

I'm thinking it might be easier to just get some scaffolding company in to cover two dormers at once - it's up in 10mins (the speed these guys work at) and then get them to move it (or remove it) when done (I might do the other two more in the summer time).

Any ideas on cost of the scaffolding - rough prices welcomed. Do they normally price it out per day or just on the job - ie I could have it for a fortnight for the same cost.

Cheers

You're not kidding. That will be absolutely wrecking the walls/soffits/roof underneath it.

I would get a MEWP but i guess that depends on how long the job will take.

Don t worry, it s fine. It s the same every year it hasn t grown much since it was last cut back at the end of the summer. We’ve lived here since 1998 so I have experience with it …

I had no idea what a MEWP was but I need somewhere with a decent flat surface to walk on and to cut the Cedral.

A tower isn't going to span that porch/extension?
Scaffolding prices seem completely random to me

Right, I'm going to be paying £600 for a four-week hire (not that I'll need four weeks) of the right scaffolding to go under those windows at the front. I'm quite happy with that to be fair. Company seem very good with excellent communication so far.

You might find someone to do it for you off ladders for £600ish. From the pictures it’s a pretty easy looking job.

I doubt that tbh. I could do it myself off ladders but I don’t want that - I can use the scaffolding to enable me to get on the roof and sort a couple of problems with one of the gulleys - so it’ll be worth it, getting the access. I’m not gojng up these ladders hundreds of times either, measuring, remeasuring etc. the dormers all look the same size, but they’re not, using up further time. I don’t want to pay the money but when I have the scaff up and I’m walking around on it, cutting the cedral up there etc- I’ll thank god I did have it.

The other dormers will cost more as I’ve got to get a pavement license apparently - £200 on its own - easy money for the council … so I may hire a tower and do them separately.

Surely you take off the old stuff and use it as a template to cut new on the ground?

Personally I would have bought a second hand tower something like this.

Done all the work on the dormers / roof at your leisure ( weather, time ) and then sold it on after.

Its big enough to work on and easy enough to put up, down ,move as and when.

A few battens across on the tiles and your away .

You could but it’s not cedral I’m taking off, it’s just badly rotted softwood cladding so the fitting is different (it has metal gutter-type edges). In truth, the cladding up there is poor and it’ll fit a lot better when re-measured.

That’s a good idea, I just don’t have the space to store anything like that. If I had a unit or even a decent-sized garden, things might be different.

Be careful, any modifications^ will likely be eye watering.

^you might not need any of course

£600 sounds right ballpark
I just paid £400 to have scaffold to get to my front & back single storey extn, for a couple of weeks,. Incl a very sturdy ladder!
Was great having that solid platform, was diy changing tiled roof (never again, hard work).
Would have taken far longer & been more dangerous using tower etc, money well spent for me.
Took them a couple of hours to put it up, 1 guy less time to remove it.
Luckily he was doing another house in my road a few weeks before, I hijacked there & got price etc, all good.

It’s up … a great job as well, took three guys less than an hour. That wood looks so bad up close. Looking forward to getting on with the job.
