There is a practice in American politics of 'bringing home the pork'

Senators have far more power than individual MP's here and try and ensure that as much spending as possible reaches their home states.

The Alaskan senators seem rather good at it, this is small beer compared to the famous bridge to nowhere that cost $300M (I believe).

Ah, I wondered what the pork reference was about. I can see why they'd want to grab as much of the (pork) pie for their state as possible, but surely it should be for a tangible benefit rather than painting aeroplanes in the hope of a possible future benefit. And Alaska isn't short of a few quid either.
