Our last set of kitchen knives started to go a bit manky after 5 years or so - handles started to break down, blades were OK.

Bought a cheap set on Amazon, direct from the manufacturer's Amazon store. Viners, about £30, so pretty basic, but supposedly not cheap rubbish either.
After a year, one of the small knives snapped while chopping veg.
Today, another one snapped while cutting potatoes. Failure point is about 10mm into the handle, looks like the tang is really slim, and it just rusted through..

Any recommendations for a 6 piece set that'll last without breaking the bank?

We don't put cutlery in the dishwasher, but it does get left submerged in the sink for a while.
Not had this problem with any other knives before. My favourite kitchen knife is a small serrated one that I bought (probably from Woolworths) when I got my first place 40+ years ago. Used pretty much every day since, and still perfect apart from a slightly scabby handle.

If budget is a factor, might be worth looking at IKEA. I bought one from them for a specific purpose and it's been much better than I was expecting.

I'd buy Robert Welch. One at a time as I needed them.

Victorinox are prefectly acceptable and even do a small serrated knife for you.
Heres a set for less than £14 a knife.

Lol, we are in no way foodie geeks. Just want a few knives that work, can take a bit of abuse, and last for years.

I googled "best knife sets" and was shocked at sets costing more than I paid for my first car.

I'm a big fan of Henckels/Zwillings, got a very good couple of knives from them but for day to day went for this 6 months ago

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0FCSS2FY9?th=1

About £150 now but I paid £99 for it and its on sale a lot. Good quality and as they are self sharpening they stay sharp without any effort. Not for a knife snob who will sharpen before each job but for day to day family use they've been excellent.

These are very good. Made from 1 piece of metal so can't "fall apart", and good value for money.

All knives need to be sharpened occasionally, after 40 years it must be like using a butter knife.

We've got a few IKEA knives that we like and a are still going strong after a few years. Surprisingly sharp to begin with. Cut my finger really nice trying to chop an onion.

If I was shopping for a set I'd probably just go to Pro Cook.

I like our Ninja ones. The block has a built in sharpener which is really handy.

I ll do the PH thing and ask why you feel you need 6 knives? Personally I would have (and do have):

Global GS-2

Global GS-11

Unless you are into kmnives for the sake of knives OP then this is the simplest answer. Find a local ProCook shop and have a look in person but the set posted earlier is as good as any for domestic use. Its soft steel to easy to keep sharp if you feel so inclined.
