G-Power M2 gets 700hp, keeps standard internals...
... and now has a carbon bonnet for good measure

While most folks’ favourite BMW M engine is probably a naturally aspirated screamer - take your pick from S14, S54, S65 and more - there must be one or two who’d nominate the current S58. The 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six is hugely powerful in the M3, super responsive for a turbo engine and, perhaps most importantly when it comes to hero status, fabulously tuneable. Modern turbo engines tend to have a good amount of headroom engineered into them, but the power boosts being achieved by this 3.0-litre are incredible. We live in a time of S58-engined cars being made for the drag strip, for heaven’s sake. It’s a monster.
So 700hp from this latest G-Power M2 should come as no surprise whatsoever. Like that lazy friend who transforms themselves after six weeks in the gym, all that it takes to get a 480hp version of the S58 engine to almost M5-rivalling power is G-Power’s proprietary software tune (with its ECU unlock), a carbon intake, sport downpipes and a new rear silencer. And voila, another 220hp. Even after a few years of these superhero-spec gains, they remain almost unbelievable. G-Power even reckons that throttle response, engine efficiency and fuel consumption are improved by the ECU work. Oh yeah, and helps bring about 620lb ft…

Now, in much the same way that an M2 doesn’t really need any more power, it probably doesn’t need to look any more dramatic either. But if you can, and the demand is there, then why not? This G-Power M2, as has become almost customary for cars from the German tuner, features one of its carbon fibre bonnets. This new GP-Venturi item can be body coloured if you wish, but then nobody would know about all the money that had been spent. Apparently thermal management is improved by the vents, and it might take a bit of weight off the front end. Certainly turn in purchase won’t be a problem, given the front tyres on these Hurricane RR wheels are even wider than standard at 285-section.
And the price? Well, carbon never comes cheap, so that’s six thousand euros, but we can go without that. Ditto another €3,300 on the carbon rear spoiler, and another thousand on a G-Power orange carbon engine cover - pass. But the powertrain upgrades - ECU unlock and tune, carbon intake, new gearbox software, exhaust, delimit - total €18,500 on G-Power’s website. Or £16,000 at the current exchange rate. And wouldn’t you know, there are low-mileage 480hp M2s for sale at almost £16,000 less than the price of a new one…
