  • In 2026!
Hi Gents,

I've sold my BMW F10 520D - I do very little miles and no longer need or want a diesel (along with potential timing chain issues etc). I also want more space in the rear for when I do use it.

I always fancied a Porsche Cayenne - I've previously owned an E53 BMW X5 and loved it in all honesty, hope the Porsche will be a step up?

Am I reasonable in thinking I can get an acceptable MK1 Cayenne for £5k in 2026? It won't be used much, but will be required to do the odd long run. I see a lot of what might be rough ones, hoping to find a diamond in the rough! Kinda being put off a V8 non turbo due to bore score - but I wanted Bose speakers which only come with the V8 Cayenne S and above!

Any current owners able to offer their thoughts?

Cheers!

If you're careful - yes.

I had a 53 plate "S" - I bought it in 2013 for a specific reason, expecting it to be the most boring car I'd ever bought and intending to sell it 6 months later when I no longer needed it.

I kept it for 10 years.

Brilliant car - even surprisingly entertaining on a twisty road if you wanted it to be. I've had a number of "nice" cars - but the Cayenne is still one I have very fond memories of - even though it was mostly treated as a mobile skip.

I only sold it because I had 3 cars - and the road tax for all of them were due in the same month. When I opened the post to find that I had to pay about £1,500 in road tax again, I had a hissy fit - advertised the Cayenne (for half your budget) and it was gone the next day.

I still miss it a bit. Brilliant cars.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. It sounds like the type of car the X5 was for me, didn't cost a lot, didn't really mean to keep it, ended up being one of my favorite cars despite owning much more expensive motors.

My 2003 S is a brilliant tip car, and very reliable. Its not a show car, and its not an everyday car - its a thirsty beast. Just remember that it was a highly expensive car to begin with, so your 6k car may well throw out a 50% bill on day two. It probably wont though, the mk1 was very well built and thought through. Check the coolant pipes have been done, look at the tyre wear (some of them eat tyres), and just be aware that they really arent cheap to run.

Cheers. Just purchased a 2004 turbo for £3500! Coolant pipes done already. This thing is quick!

I would be interested to see how you get on with it from a reliability and running view point. i've been tempted on a few occasions to buy one as a second/ third car but never made the leap

I may make a readers cars thread in that case. Show how I financially ruin myself!
