A fair while ago I went to a lovely little pub in the Lake District but I can t remember where it is or what it was called.

I m not holding out much hope on locating it but it s worth a try.

Vague description;

On a hill (obviously) in a small town/large village. Buildings on both sides of the road and the pub was in a row of other buildings rather than on its own. On the left hand side as you drive up the hill.

No car park IIRC, definitely had to park on the road outside and the door was straight onto the path/road.

Served really good curries, not sure if it is what it s known for but everyone I was with had curry so I think that may be the only option on the menu.

Had an insane range of whiskey behind the bar.

Thats basically all I can remember.

Any ideas?

Any idea what towns were nearby? Or at least whether it was north or south Lakes?

I suspect it s somewhere near Penrith/Lowther/Askham as that s where we were staying and we wouldn’t have travelled too far from there.

I like your thinking but it was way too long ago to be able to check.

Chat GPT says:

There are a couple of pubs in the Penrith/Askham/Lowther area that are worth checking, and one in particular might be what you’re thinking of:

🍺 Likely candidate

Punchbowl Inn – Askham, Penrith, CA10 2PF, United Kingdom

Traditional village pub in Askham, a small village south of Penrith.

Classic exterior with building close to the road rather than in its own large site — fits some of your memory.

Known to have a very good selection of whiskies and spirits behind the bar.

Serving pub food all day (though not specifically Indian/curry focused on the menu from current descriptions).

Askham itself has buildings either side of the road with fairly tight parking — similar to what you remember.

It doesn’t look like it’s known for curries in its standard menu now, but menus do change and locals sometimes call special curry nights.

🥃 Other nearby pubs (less likely but worth knowing)

These are good pubs in small villages or Penrith itself with nice food/whisky — though none are primarily curry places:

The Queen’s Head Askham – Traditional village pub in Askham with wood-fired pizzas and hearty fare.

Lowther Castle Inn – Classic country pub near Hackthorpe with traditional fare.

The Cross Keys Inn – Popular near Carleton with locally sourced food.

🥘 Curry-centric nearby option (not a pub)

If what you really recall is pub-like with great curry, it might actually have been a bierkeller / curry house in town rather than a traditional West Country pub. Penrith has good curry restaurants like Indian Plaza but not in a pub building.

.
Definitely not, and despite ChatGPT’s insistence, it has its own site and isn’t on the road.

Also none of the others suggested.

It wouldn’t have been NEAR Askham but also not far, maybe 30 minutes away?

Hmm, that's disappointing - ChatGPT seemed so sure (which is a lesson for us all...)!

This one fits uphill on the left, but not really straight onto the road

Horse and Farrier at Dacre: https://maps.app.goo.gl/2bzxXTWDu6nneARU8

Also another Horse & Farrier at Threlkeld - front door onto the road but does have a car park and not much of a hill

Okay, do there's a distinct possibility that the establishment may have closed since covid .

Oh 100%. I think that might be why I’m struggling.
