Just watched Marco Rubio giving a speech at the Munich Security Conference.

He is Trump's Secretary of State, but he comes across as well measured.

Possible future president?

He is a Cuban immigrant so hopefully has more personal insight and self-awareness than the rest of the clowns around him.

Not sure MAGA types would vote for a Cuban immigrant?

I wonder how he stays in role . Most of his attributes are at odds with his boss. I agree he is both measured and appears intelligent and diplomatic.

He was born in the US to Cuban immigrant parents.

Most of the well informed commentators seem listen to him not Trump. Trump has not been very good at articulating American foreign policy.

Unfortunately "we" tend to click to read Trumps words more than we click to read Rubio's words so that's what the media serves up.

He comes across as the best of a bad lot…

Not sure whether his credibility is harmed or enhanced by his stance on UAP disclosure

Agreed and better him there than Trump, Vance or another one his 'special' envoys.

Though once he's no longer of use to Trump, he'll be cast aside like everyone else, maybe even ICE'd by the Trumpians.

That's exactly why he lost to Trump in 2016. He was rounded on by the other republican candidates for being polished and well spoken and thus an empty suit. He was also criticised for being a one-time senator and thus lacking experience which I guess wouldn't count now.

I fear a GoP is which nominated Trump three times in a row is too MAGA infected to put forward another McCain or anyone capable of being statesmanlike.

It is quite eye opening seeing what Vance, Rubie, etc had to say about Trump in 2016 compared to what they're saying now. Politics seems like a system designed to promote the most venal above all else.

Unfortuantely policy doesn’t seem to reflect what Rubio says. Rubio has made a few comments which could be interpreted as pro Ukraine….but that hasn’t been reflected in US action which leans towards Russia.

I heard some highlights of what he said. Sounded to me like TACO Trump has finally noticed Europe getting its house in order with regards to not being able to rely on USA as a trusted partner and are realising it will ultimately harm USA. Seemed to be an attempt at repairing damage done.

Seen some clips and I think he articulates well the intellectual basis for conservative renewal.

Decline started with cultural self loathing. So you have to tackle that at source otherwise you don't have a centre right worth voting for.

He's Trump's good cop. There are more bad cops in Trump's orbit. What Rubio says was probably more or less signed off by Trump. But Trump will have likely spoken to the other headbangers since and changed his mind.

This is our problem; what they say doesn't really matter. It's what they do that matters.

It’s refreshing to hear him state that the United Nation plays no role and has no power, then gets a standing ovation from European leaders. A healthy dose of realism.

So he’s an outsider that should be deported then?

Out of all the members of the Trump regime he does come across as the most level headed, but I guess that's not a particularly high bar.

I always think he has the look of someone who knows he's sold his soul to the devil... whether it pays off and he's nominated heir to the throne remains to be seen.

It's definitely realism in that it shows that the US government can and probably will be just as big a bunch of wkers as the Russians. the Chinese, and any other despotic regime who uses military power to get what it wants, mainly for the benefit of those in the ruling class.

As Carney said, it's a wake-up call to all the "middle powers". If I was Germany i'd be looking at developing nukes asap.

The standing ovation should be a wake up call to Carney :-)

I think you're misreading the situation quite spectacularly if viewing the standing ovation for Rubio - given because He's Not Trump - as any sign of a material schism between the European bloc and Carney's stance.
