this is my current monitor (until it decided to RIP itself).
its 27", 1440p, 99%sRGB, 1000:1contrast, 350nits, 60hz
I got it for free via work when covid hit. I pair it with my work laptop when WFH, and my home laptop (legion 7) when not working. Overall I have been happy with the screen sizee, it's image quality and 1440p resolution. 60hz might be a little slow for if i want to game on it (not competitively).

I can't figure out what to replace it with.
On one end of the scale my brain says get a 27" OLED, MSI ones can be had for £400-500.
On the other hand I could replace it with a 34" ultrawide that's IPS and calibrated at factory. However there's so much choice I don't know where to look, and I need this for work (so can't mull over it for 1-2 weeks). Bear in mind the monitor it replaces is almost 6 years old, so I'd imagine almost any IPS screen will look better than it (but would a VA?)

Thoughts? I know how nice OLED looks, 10years ago i used to have a del XPS with an OLED screen and it was the best screen I've ever used.

Budget of no more than £500. I could easily spend more but to me this seems frivolous. when I'm not working my current usage is watching youtube videos, and live gaming streams. But I would like to get back into casual photo editing/lightroom again. if there's something that ticks both boxes (OLED + ultrawide) then i might consider it.

edit: i realize now that miniLED ones are affordable now too.

I replaced my old HP 27inch with a Dell 34 Plus USB-C Monitor - S3425DW recently and am very happy with it. I wasn’t sure about the curved screen but I don’t really notice it

Does the viewing angles annoy you at all? I think that's the only thing that might concern me about buying it. Current monitor is IPS. It'll only be me using it.

as OLEDs go this MSI 341CQP seems like the best value option out there, and only £500. The only thing that concerns me is it's brightness at 250nits

I spend probably 15+ hours a day looking at the screen as a combination of WFH, browsing, videos, youtube, gaming, live streams. So i want it to look good. Not keen on having multiple monitors. I would rather have just the 1.

+1 for this setup.

Albeit i went for triple 27 inch monitors. I think there were maybe £100 each.

Can be got for £90 each now

34s IMHO are too big, particularly in a minimum of x2 screens that i prefer.

Ultrawides.... not a fan. I like to be able to move "something to another screen easily rather than within one.

Not at all. I was a bit sceptical but I hardly notice it. The curve is less than I imagined

I had 2x 27" HP monitors for a few years. I really wanted a 49" ultra wide but could never justify the cost. A single 49er is the same as 2x 27 next to each other.

Then I had to relocate my home office and downsize my desk. For me, a single 27 doesnt cut it as a lot of real estate when doing CAD is handy, a fair portion of the screen is taken by assembly and model tree. I opted for a curved 34" from LG and i'm really happy with it. Its like a 27" but 1/3 wider. I wont be going back to a standard format for CAD. And curved makes it nicer too.

ETA: it got mine much reduced as it was second hand. The original owner was a gamer and had just but a curved 49 so got mine for about £200 when the RRP was closer to £600 iirc

Ive just ordered this 49'er - £499 - https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/electriq-eiq-495kc...

Its just fo work really, literally zero gaming so the 144hz doesnt bother me.

Should arrive this week and looking forward to a unified sceen (I use 3 32s at the moment and although I will lose some real-estate I am hoping that my use becomes more efficient).

Seems not a bad deal really.

Check out the Dell Pro Plus range. Bought a 32” P3225QE for a new office recently, in a change from the 3x 27” Dells (now 5+ years old) I’ve historically run, and it’s working really well, so will be adding another this coming week. Will probably also buy a pair for my home office too.

They’re a little under £450 each inc vat.

No gaming, just like high performance screens/lots of screen real estate for Office apps (multiple docs, large spreadsheets) and CAD viewer.

I looked at these, but seeing as the MSI 34" QD OLED is only £500 that is currently the one I'm eyeing up.

I've decided I want one of the 34" ultrawide OLED monitors, now to just figure out which one. The MSI I previously mentioned is top of the list with it being only £500, however from what I've read these are gen 1 panels and the gen 2 and 3 ones have slightly different pixel arrangements that'll make viewing text ever so slightly easier. Don't know which monitors these are or how much they are.

When you get up to £4-500, it’s probably hard to buy a dog of a monitor these days.

I mainly went for a high end Dell IPS because that’s what I’ve used for years and I know that I can sit behind them for ages if needed.

Genuine question - what advantage does a 49 inch ultra wide give you over, say three 27 inch monitors set up in the same configuration, or in your case foregoing three 32 inch screens?

Honestly, no deal at all.

Potentially though - I think it depends on usage - I find that I mainly use each screen for a particular app / window and therefore waste a lot of screen space - so I’m hoping to eradicate that - whether it works or not … we shall see!!

So far my two options are these.

MSI341CQP

Samsung dyssey OLED G8 G85SD

MSI is £500, samsung is £700. I've dismissed other ones as I've learnt that they have fans in them that can sometimes come on and make noise, some worse than others. These two seem to be passively cooled, so much quieter.

and for all the comments about buying basic, 4:3, dual/triple screens that clearly haven't read my post.. I've used that in the office, it's fine for the office. But this isn't for the office, it's for my bedroom. As mentioned I've been using a 27" 16:9 monitor that I've really enjoyed using for the past 5+ years. I have a minimalist setup so don't want multiple monitors. When its work time I hook the work laptop to the main monitor and my personal one is off to the side for watching things. When work is done the work laptop is thrown back into the wardrobe as if it never existed and my personal laptop (top spec legion 7) is used on the main monitor.
