Well more an insurance story that I just had to share.

I got my renewal quote in so though I’d go through the comparison sites to see if I could get a better deal.

Got one for £297, a bit better than my current one. But the site only had a choice of a concrete or brick garage. Mine is a wooden shed which my current insurer accepted.

So I phoned them up to check if a shed is acceptable. Nope.

So the modified quote….£903.

I’m assuming the call handler made a mistake somewhere but I was too stunned to argue.

Yup I had this with a few insurers, some ask for pictures to verify too. I've had a concrete garage built since.

I read a case about this sometime last year.

From memory the question was Where will the vehicle be stored? The answer was "Garage". Insurers tried to get out of the claim as it wasn't brick built but were overuled.

They seem most keen on the floor. I’ve got a garage with a wood door but as it’s got a concrete floor it’s as good as fort knox for insurance.

The company I m with is happy with the wooden shed and it s in the policy documents.

It s lined with plywood and security hinges etc and nobody s getting in there easily but I suppose it still goes in the same category as a cheap one from B&Q.

Just surprised at the crazy increase in premium. I think I ll redo the quote just to see what happens.

Edit I see the problem now, basically nobody wants to insure it unless it s garaged. I changed the parking to ..on private property and only 9 companies would quote. The company I m paying just over 300 quid for next year would want £2079.

That's a crazy increase in premium if nothing has changed in the meantime... Bennetts seem pretty clear:

What counts as ‘garaged’?
Garage: Securely-locked and of brick or concrete construction, located on your own property and access into it cannot be shared with anyone outside your household.
Metal shed: A securely-locked and solidly-built steel shed, located on your own property and access into it cannot be shared with anyone outside your household.
Shipping container: Securely-locked and of sound construction, located on your own property and access into it cannot be shared with anyone outside your household.
Wooden shed: Securely-locked and of sound construction. If it has no floor of its own, the walls must be securely fixed to a concrete base. If it has a wooden floor, this must be securely fixed to the shed’s walls, and the shed must be sat on a solid concrete base or concrete paving slabs. The shed must be located on your own property and access into it cannot be shared with anyone outside your household.

I’m with BikeSure who from what I remember last year the call handler had to go and check as it wasn’t one of the choices on the form. I’m just using them again.

The one who didn’t agree with the wooden shed was BeMoto who again went and checked and came back with the premium of £903. The trouble is you’re at the mercy of whoever is at the other end of the phone and their experience (or lack of). I suspect she just disregarded garaging all together and went straight to parking it in the open.

Do they think someone is going to tunnel into a wooden shed or something?
