Absolutely fed up with HMRC we submitted vat return in November £9k odd repayment.

Estimated payment date of 14 December sent for further checks and then never changed status I’ve called over 10 times they said no one has even looked at it yet it’s laughable.

Submitted another one last month for £115k same status sent for further checks but not one bit of comms from HMRC

They are beyond hopeless

Yet, if you fall foul of their timescales you get a whole heap of issues. Isn’t VAT customs and excise?

C&E merged with inland revenue to become HM Revenue & Customs about 20 years ago.

Staff reductions since the formation of HMRC + continuing additions to the tax code make this more or less inevitable.

Plus of course they were starting from a pretty low base to start with.

You’re not understanding how tax works - late repayments, but if you don’t pay on time, it’s fines etc.

I registered a tiny Ltd company for VAT voluntarily as was buying a building with VAT. Company has existed for around a decade but only ever ~30k turnover. I used money from all over sent directly to solicitors and entered the purchase manually on accounting software (Xero). Return filed 1st Jan and got a repayment on 8th Jan. That must be ripe for abusing.

I've had nothing but negative experiences with HMRC and VAT.

TLDR: Tried to transfer VAT registration from sole trader to limited company. HMRC cocked it up, took over a year to get it sorted.

The Valuation Office (Business Rates) it now being absorbed into HMRC, service from the VO deteriorated when they closed their regional offices, it is not going to get any better.

Isn't this the truth - my mail today contained a CT refund from 10 years ago. I'd completely forgot about it. At least they paid interest on it!
