Wetherspoon dog policy could be breaking the law
Discussion
Didn't know this was a thing.
Wetherspoon dog policy could be breaking the law, watchdog says
Is people passing off normal pet dogs as assistance dogs really such a problem that they feel the need to alienate people with legitimate disabilities who depend on their dogs?

No idea but I wish supermarkets would do it, fed up of seeing 10 year old mangy pugs being carted around in a shopping trolly.Dirty b

Apparently so. Quite believable given how many people like to take the piss. The usual trained assistance dog isn't going to be an issue in the first place so I doubt would have spurred them into action (they wouldnt waste staff time over nothing) but there will be plenty of scummers claiming their Staffie is there to help with their anxiety or whatever.
Given the apparent ambiguity in the law and that their policy is a check not a straight ban I can see how they got there, even if it needs some improvement.
Good.
I could stick a jacket on my Rottweiler and try and blag it. I could do the same for my rottie/german shepherd cross and claim he is a ‘service dog’. Both would do enough tricks to con a fool but their primary purpose is to protect my house and bite those who I tell them to. Neither need to go to spoons.
The number of out of control and dangerous trained dogs I see in unsuitable situations is out of control. Whining and barking toy breeds in coffee shops etc.
We need to stop thinking dogs are humans need to be with us all the time. Stick your dog in a crate and go to the pub or stay at home.

Ever been to a 'Spoons butch? If you own an assistance dog legitimately, you'll have no issues whatsoever getting into Spoons. Total non-story that you shouldn't trouble yourself with dear boy.

Because the article suggests that's the issue.

Everyone needs ID for their dog same is everyone needs ID for a drink.
Really?"The charity Assistance Dogs UK said it believed, from its understanding of the law, that the pub chain's policy was discriminatory and that no identification was legally required."
Am I misunderstanding the article?

The problem these days is people take the piss.
It was reported on TV news this morning that Alton Towers no longer recognise anxiety and ADHD as a disability to get a special "skip the queue" pass.
I would question why someone with anxiety is going to Alton Towers in the first place.
The problem is nearly a third of kids seem to have a "ism" these days and those skipping the queue also included family members - all nine of them!
I like the fact that Wetherspoons don't allow dogs (other than assistance dogs) inside their pubs.

But I am surprised that the amount of people taking the piss is enough that they think this is a proportionate response.

It might be their pub, but they still need to obey the law.butchstewie said:
I should have been clearer - I mean their general "no dogs" policy not the "we want ID for assistance dogs" and so on.
I went to a gastro pub on Saturday for lunch with the wife, a rare escape from the kids. 2 of their 3 restaurant rooms were ‘dog friendly’ and we were the only people sat in the non friendly one. I was surprised at the demand, spoons are missing a trick although I think the clientele might have different attitudes to where their pets defocate? So perhaps good reason.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
