Is there any particular advantage in doing this given that I'll still have to collect a room key?

You register online rather than at reception

I did it a few weeks ago, straight to reception, they had all necessary details, key handed over, very efficent

Hilton, and some other chains, also offer the option of a digital key using your phone. No physical check in required just go straight to your room. I've used it a few times when I knew I'd be arriving at a potentially busy time. Normally go and pick up a physical key later

Some of the big chains will let you go keyless if you check in online & use their app to open the door. It’s a bit of a gimmick, but it might save a few minutes in a queue. Main advantage, as said, is that you don’t need to fill in any forms or provide a card at checkin.

Not sure if they still do it, they certainly did in the 2010s, but with Hilton online checkin you could select your room. That was worth it!

Park Gate in Cardiff is online check-in and keyless. The downside is you have no interaction with any staff at all unless you use the restaurant/bar.

The disadvantage is no chance of an upgrade.

I never check in online.

This. Always book directly with the hotel, not the middle-men. And always check in at the desk.

One advantage of Eurostar over flying is no stupid need to check in online the previous day.
