Beware guys, our Mk8 GTI was stolen via burglary last night.

It then pinged ANPR in South Bristol at 0140 this morning

Professional gang, broke in at rear of property, super quiet (I am a light sleeper), found the keys and took the car.

Police said lots of similar cars are being taken overnight all over Avon & Somerset!

Keep your keys well hidden or with you upstairs overnight.

They didn’t come up and bother us even though they couldn’t find the key to another car.

Take care everyone!

That's a shame, nice car as well. I have learnt to sleep with one eye open so I am aware of the security lights being triggered...!!

Sorry to read that - complete nightmare and makes most of us feel very angry on your behalf that some seem to think they have a right to steal your stuff.

I personally leave my keys where that can be found. Once burgers are in the house, I would want them out asap, ideally without menacing my family to get the keys.

Sorry to hear that, you’re right it may take a while to sink in - on the plus side minimal damage and nobody was harmed. Insert swear word of choice here.

Oh, I’d just eat them. That’ll teach ‘em.

I installed something called GJD security system a few years ago. It's an internal beeper that also controls your flood lights. If someone steps on the drive the lights come on and it beeps every time the trip the PIR (so if they are milling about on the drive then the thing is constantly beeping). I also wired a small piezo beeper outside loud enough not to annoy the neighbours but so you know you're presence is noted. We had incidents before of people trying the car doors. Since I've had this system then that's disappeared. I've also set the PIR so it catches the pavement so you know you're being watched before you set foot on the drive.

Sorry you had to go through that OP, I've been there and it sucks. I ended up spending about £4k on home security just so I could sleep at night.

I've been looking for something like this for a while. Which PIR have you got and is there a way to send a notification to a phone too?

It’ll be something like this

https://alertelectrical.com/gjd-dygizone-security-...

It’s on my to do list - it’s dead clever - you can either have beeps or a prerecorded ‘get orf moi laaand’ message. Still waiting for the shotgun cartridge upgrade…

That's exactly what I have as above. I mounted the piezo buzzer inside the PIR case. It just clips off and plenty of space inside. It beeps day and night obviously floods only come on at night. I think it can trigger CCTV or ptz cameras. Unsure but haven't ventured down that path.

Thanks for the thoughts people.

I’m going to have a local security expert come over and make suggestions / give me a quote.

Fit a hidden switch that's easy to reach and connects the ignition directly to the horn. When you get in and out of the car you remember to flip the switch. If a thief gets in the car the horn will sound as soon as they switch on the ignition. They're not likely to stick around looking for the switch and they're unlikely to drive away with the horn blaring.

I think I would have sold the car, whatever it is, way before that stage.

Sorry to hear this OP.

I leave my keys on the stairs, I'm not making it too easy for the scum, but if they've got to the point where they're coming upstairs I'd rather they just take the keys and do one before getting to my kids bedrooms.

Something we have, not through choice but because the previous owner of our house was very security conscious, is a security system with movement sensors all around the perimeter and and control panels dotted about the place. It flashes when there's movement and shows which zone. You can set it to chime, set the security lights to trigger or both, or just turn them off.

We turn them all on when we go to bed, nobody could get within 10 metres of the house without it waking us up, well worth looking at.
