They got very very lucky. Hell of a swim.
Not forgetting that there are things in the water there that will eat you. Also some of that coast the 4k swim would just be the start of it, you'd have a bit of a trek afterwards if you could get to shore.
There's a lot of coastline along the south that looks nice and is potentially lethal in lots of ways, even without sailing off on a lilo.

I've been to most of that coast.I know people who've witnessed shark attacks there & dealt with the aftermath.
Some people act like it's Bondi or Cottesloe when it isn't. The wildlife might not get you but the water can be really hazardous in a lot of spots and it's entirely possible no-one will see you've gone for a long time.
As said, they got lucky. If he hadn't been such a good swimmer and worked so hard it would have all just been a mystery.
