I used to buy most of my jeans from Next but in recent years they seem to be a world apart. With the inclusion of lycra, they're stretchy and generally don't fit me too well. Am I alone in this?

I've tried other retailers such as M&S and found them to be the same too so I recently bought a pair of Wranglers, they're better but still not as nice as jeans from years ago.

Am I shopping in the wrong shops, where do you all buy jean from nowadays?

Levi's 511 typically for me.

Do try them on as (with other trousers) I've noted you can buy exactly the same size in different colours and (I presume owing to fabric differences) they fit slightly differently.

“Proper” raw selvedge denim is the stuff to get. The overly stretchy Next stuff is just ste and inconsistent, and even Levi’s isn’t that great these days.

I struggle, I'm 30/30 and need slim fit. Levis do some and Boss do some too, so I tend to stick to them in different colours.

Once I find a brand that fits, I just order all the different permutations. However, they do last, and wash well.

This!

I've had a pair of 511 recently too, they were better than Next but not as good as Next used to be. What's happened to jeans, it wasn't that long ago!! I'll probably try another pair of 511, unless you have any suggestions?

If it’s important to you, Hiut denim is British/Welsh made jeans of excellent quality and fit, but you pay for it.
Otherwise Naked & Famous or Nudie jeans are very good. Unbranded too.

I bought a pair of Hiut jeans around seven years ago (it was an “inspirational” purchase in that I needed to lose a few pounds for them to fit. I never did and I look longingly at them in my wardrobe, but one day! I think I paid around £150-175 and have just looked at the price and they are now around £325! They are however excellent quality.

I wear Levi 511 most days as they fit me really well but I would agree that the quality has declined.

Yep after flirting with budget brands, mainly ASOS branded, for a number of years and wearing out the crotch far quicker than one would have expected, I have started wearing 511's, I like the slimmer fit, they wear well and are extremely comfortable, I buy a longer leg as I like to turn them up. I too have noticed though that different finishes do tend to be sized, or at least feel it, differently.

Are those 511s a bit tight for powerfully built directors?

I tore some jeans a few years back whilst I was away, so popped into Primark to buy a pair for a tenner just to see me thru the week. They were brilliant, lovely fit, button fly, lasted about 3 years of wear.

Get all my jeans from Primark now, although the cost of living crisis means they cost about £12 these days.

Levi's are always reliable, but a High Street brand I really like is Crew. I tend to buy 2 or 3 pairs at a time and am always pleased with the fit and quality.

I've got a few pairs of strides with a button fly and really don't like them. Perhaps my bulge overwhelms it(!) but I much prefer a zip.

No help to the OP but I bought a pair of Amazon Essentials jeans for rolling round on the garage floor or doing the garden.

More comfortable than Next, M&S etc.

In the 40 years I have been buying jeans, I have always regretted buying anything that was not Levis. Apart from one pair of Evisu, in the early 00s when that look appealed to me.

If you find a proper Levis store the staff will be super knowledgeable and you can buy jeans of any type, including selvedge for £££. And they will alter them for you for pennies.
