Tudor Dakar Sponsorship
Discussion
I think I said this last year, but does anyone else think that Tudor should do more with their Dakar sponsorship, given that they have multiple watches for other events/sports?
Yes the Ranger is a good watch, but it's not a 'competition' piece. Given their range of nice chronos, I'm surprised they haven't produced a sand coloured chrono like the IWC Topgun. It would look great IMHO.

I see where you are coming from and although I am a bit of a sucker for ‘tie-in’ products I think it can also be damaging for a brand; you only have to look at Bremont to see how releasing far too many ‘special editions’ dilutes the integrity of the product, especially a premium product that is meant to sell on its own merits. The fact that Tudor is owned by Rolex probably means that external brand tie-ins will be a rare occurrence.
Sometimes these associations can make it look like you can’t shift the product by itself so you have to make a special edition to create some interest. There are brands that advertise during events to sell their standard watch ranges (Rolex at Wimbledon or golf events for example), and brands that collaborate with brands to sell ‘special editions’ (like Tag Heuer F1 by Kith for example).
I feel like Tudor shouldn’t do tie-ins personally due to being a Rolex offshoot. Just seems un-Rolex.
Just my thoughts on an interesting subject and not trying to be argumentative in any way.

Yes but they already pay for it, they've been the event sponsor for a while. It's gotta look better than the cycling edition one. Plus motorsport is highly connected to chronographs.Sometimes these associations can make it look like you can t shift the product by itself so you have to make a special edition to create some interest. Bremont did stupid special editions like pieces of planes and movie editions. Not the same IMHO.

ps. The sand dial would actually look pretty amazing on the Ranger
Do you mean the one above? It's an actual watch.

Isn’t the idea of sponsoring an event (for brands with integrity) that people see your brand at the event and on TV and buy your watch (in this case) rather than making a watch with the Dakar logo on the case back.
I would imagine that Tudor do the timing for the Dakar Rally to imply that they provide precision timing equipment rather than than the other way round (i.e. sponsor Dakar to try and glean some sort of kudos from being associated with them or allowing Tudor access to the Dakar logo for their caseback, etc).
Or am I missing your point?
Do you mean like what they did with their David Beckham association...make an Inter Miami dial without actually saying ‘this is an Inter Miami special edition, each watch has the Inter Miami logo meticulously engraved into the caseback and is in a limited edition of just 4-4-2 pieces’. I know I’m being slightly silly there but that’s what some brands do. Breitling NFL and rugby special editions for example.

Yeah, I didn't say stick a logo on it, I just meant if you're going to tie a watch in with a motorsport event at least make it one that can time stuff.I would imagine that Tudor do the timing for the Dakar Rally to imply that they provide precision timing equipment rather than than the other way round (i.e. sponsor Dakar to try and glean some sort of kudos from being associated with them or allowing Tudor access to the Dakar logo for their caseback, etc).
