Vitamin D, sunlight, mood, convertibles and panoramic roofs?

Any thoughts?

Due to experience I am not a fan of sunroofs and one car I wouldn't mind owning are known to have panoramic roof problems when they were introduced on that model.

I've had convertibles before.

My mood and general aliveness and being 'present' seems to improve after a motorcycle ride.


It would be anecdotal, but have any PHers noted an improvement in their mood and/or health from using a convertible or a car with an expansive glass sunroof?

Improved mood certainly. I love top down motoring and can't remember the last time we didn't have a convertible or targa roof car on the drive.

I'd love a car with a proper panoramic roof.

I've had a couple of convertibles and they are sporty so hard to say whether the "mood" things was due to daylight or a spirited drive (or a bit of both) but if you offered me a choice between a tin roof and a bloody big glass roof I'd take glass all day long.

I'm sure there's a science answer but to me it's just common sense that more natural light is a good thing.

Automotive glass filters almost all UVB which is needed for vitamin d synthesis.

So with that in mind I recently bought a convertible which lives in a warm sunny place and it s bloody wonderful. Serious mood improver and I can t imagine not having a soft top going forward.
Daily has a twin panel glass roof and it s fine, brightens a drab all black typically corporate german interior up a lot. Turns it into an oven in warmer climates, car is like a sweat lodge until the AC catches up in the summer.

We have not owned a convertible for several years now and miss owning one every day. Every day was an open top day for us and improved every single journey.

Riding a bike or driving an open top both give me similar happy feelings, driving a tiptop is warm, snug and dry but doesn't give the same sense of joy.

I've tried living without a convertible but that doesn't work for me. I think I will always have one.
Daily is a quite enclosed hatchback with no sunroof/pan roof and I will not make that mistake again. I think it mattered less in the past because 80/90s cars had much deeper windows, smaller pillars so didn't feel so enclosed but sometimes it feels like being in a bunker with a dark interior as well.
