warplane rides?
Discussion
now i appreciate this will be expensive, but does anybody offer flights in ww11 or earlier planes ?
My dads somwhat of an aircraft buff and particularly interested in early stuff , in his youth he was a member of the ATC and flew chipmunks but because of his parents wishes never fulfilled his ambitions to fly in the RAF. Hes gettin on a bit now though still physically very fit
I'd really like to sort somthing out for him and without going in to too much detail, it may be a question of seizing the day and the expense be dammed
Amongst the pistonheads massive there must be other aicraft nutters who know a lot more about this stuff than me.

Getting a ride in a genuine WW2 era Warbird is extremely difficult. Firstly, many of them are single seaters, which obviously precludes passsengers. Secondly, those that aren't single seaters are operated by individuals or companies that do not have a licence to carry passengers, even for joy rides.
The types of aircraft that you might find in the UK that would fall into your category might be -
De Havilland DH82 Tiger Moth
Plenty of these are around and some are operated by businesses who will allow passenger rides. There was a thread on this recently. There is definitely the possibility of getting a ride in one of these from White Waltham. However, although of WW2 vintage, they aren't exactly "Warbirds".
North American T-6 Harvard
I know some of these have been used for pleasure flights in the past. There are quite a few in the UK so there must be someone out there who would offer this service.
Beech 18/C-45 Expeditor
Again, there are a couple of these in the UK and maybe these could be hired for pleasure flight use.
De Havilland DH-89 Dragon Rapide
Air Atlantique in Coventry and at least one company at Duxford offer pleasure flights in these
Douglas DC-3/C-47 Dakota
See Air Atlantique
Avro Anson
Air Atlantique again
Goodwood recently started a classic aviation enthusiast's club. They don't have a fleet of their own but they do organise flights in other companies' aircraft.

Want the ultimate? Got loads of cash?
Here you go, Spitfire out of Duxford. Long waiting list and over £2K

I would go for a YAK52 flicht. A 1/10th of the cost with the same feel.

Just to throw another name in the discussion, a lot of P-51 Mustangs have 2nd seats. Although you'd find it difficult to blag a ride.
Here's the UK website for all warbird operators - www.ukwarbirds.net/operators.html
Although I do have a soft spot for Peter Teichman's Beech Staggerwing.
Lovely flyer.

I think the company in Florida operate T-6s out of Kissimmee. They had a fatal crash a month or two back and may not be flying at them moment.
What did I tell ya. Encyclopedia!
Eric, we had a house in Kissimme up to last Christmas. Unfortunatly, do to a "mis-hap", we lost all our digital photos from there. Veterans Day (in October I think) was incredible with bombers and fighters buzzing around the place for a weekend. It was wonderful, playing golf, with that drone in the distance all around and over our heads, single and in formation. I think you might have liked it.

I used to do business with a chap who flew a Tiger Moth out of Booker airfield near High Wycombe.
His company is called Tiger Fly and he takes people out for flights in his plane.

I can't see any details regarding actually getting to fly in it? I seem to remember reading that there were now no Spitfires which were allowed to passenger in the UK?
There are several companies offering Mustang rides, although most seem to be in the US.
There are very few two seat Spitfires - and only two in the UK.
In fact, there were very few two seat Spitfires ever built and those that were were conversion of single seaters (usually Mk IXs). The RAF never used them. Their main operators being the Dutch Air Force and the Irish Army Air Corps. One of the pair based in the UK is now flying in its authentic Irish colours - and it looks lovely.
