Afternoon all,

I've been looking at getting a lift for my garage. The ceiling is too low for a two post at just under 2.8m and I doubt the concrete would be up to the task of holding it, so I've been looking at a scissor lift.

Looks similar to the ones from automotech or the Strongman Clifton, however has a higher lift height of 1.2 meters instead of 1 meter like the rest. The only thing that gives me pause is that the website looks relatively new and there's not that many reviews or info from others who have bought. I gather that all of these scissor lifts are made in China, so do you think there is really much difference in terms of quality from one brand to the next?

I don't have any experience of them personally but have toyed with the idea before, and never made the jump for the reason that they do seem to "hide" a lot of what you might want to work on when it is in the air.

Just worth looking into depending on what you want it for.

I went for a high left jack & set of 7-tonne axle stands.

I can relatively easily get the car around 750mm up at the stands.

That's a fair point. Most of the stuff i'll be doing is standard servicing, brakes, wheel bearings etc.

I also like the fact I can use one side as a motorbike lift. Seen a few folk online doing this with similar lifts and seems to be stable enough.

I have an Automotech in-floor scissor lift. Great bit of kit that’s been in for about 5 years now.

However I do also have a two-poster. In most cases the scissor is the go-to for easy use and quick loading but some cars just don’t work well on it and access can be an issue if you need to get to the cills etc.

Excuse the st photo!

Its great for brakes and suspension.

Also did the clutch on the 987 on it. Man maths means its free now as that job paid for it...

Its a pain for under body jobs. Thinking i may make 4x wheel or body stands to allow the ramp to be dropped.

I went for the scissor lift from BH repairs for my Caterham, a bit overkill perhaps as they say its rated for 2.7T, however I've had it 5 years this month and it's been worth it's weight in gold.

Another BH customer here - I’ve had mine since 2015, and it’s been used to build my Exocet and do all manner of servicing and other jobs over that time - would definitely rank as one of the best garage investments I’ve made…

I spent some time looking at these at the NEC Classic Car Show last year, very impressive.

I shall be buying one if the bonus fairy smiles on me this year…

I have an Automotech AS-7530D - it’s fantastic for brakes/suspension/servicing etc.

Needing to have an air supply for the safety locks is a bit of a pain if you don’t currently have a compressor though.

We use 3 different Automotec ramps in our workshops. They get hammered day in, day out and have stood up to the abuse well. The oldest is 7 years old.

A faff for a low car as they wont fit under, so jack up and slide under the tyre.

Good because you can lower individually, so can drop ine onto an axle stand and remove the wheel.

Got them because the scissors would foul the undertrays and also easier to get in and out if working on the gearbox

Heavier than you think.

I've got an Automotech one.
The frame will get in the way of some things but not others.
It's a swings and roundabouts situation, always a compromise to some extent but you won't regret getting one.
Wouldn't be without one now.
A plank and a wheelchock and I can get the bike on it as well.

I've also had an automotech one (https://automotechservices.co.uk/products/as-7430h-3-0t-low-entry-full-rise-scissor-lift/) since the end of 2019 - I'm constrained by height and floor strength issues for a traditional two poster.

The sills are blocked which was a bit of a pain on my VX220 as it blocked access to the fixings on the side for under trays, however once off its great, I've done suspension changes on the VX220 I had & now my 997, masses of oil changes, brake jobs, exhaust swaps and other random jobs since then, absolutely paid for itself, obviously a bit of an investment but the recent suspension job on my 997 would have been a pain on axle stands and the exhaust work a real pain.
