Help needed please!

I know nothing about travel or travel insurance yet am going to NZ in December for a month. I believe I need travel insurance. However, would it be in my ticket price, or household policy, or anything else? I'm sure many people go abroad covered about 3 times...

I will also have about £1K's worth of camera stuff with me - how do I cover that?

A friend has recommended http://www.insureandgo.com/ - any good?

Yours, a travel dweeb.

Your camera gear may well be covered by your home contents policy, but check what the values covered for individual items are.

Check your bank account extras - a lot of accounts (certainly a lot of Lloyds ones) give you free travel insurance.

I'd invest in a good policy which covers you for cancellation, curtailment, plus at least £10 million for medical. You must phone and notify whom ever you buy your policy from, of any pre existing medical conditions, which may include something like asthma. It's also important to check that it covers things like funeral expenses and the cost of sending your body home.

Personally I would ensure you photograph all your photographic equipment and check that you have receipts for anything you are taking, in addition I'd ask for these items to be named on the policy.

Personally, I'd buy a one-way ticket and not bother coming back to this country. NZ is stunningly beautiful. You'll love the whole experience. Enjoy.

Thanks CC; nothing is impossible - although it's not an option at present due to ageing mother and my not having 100 points (NZ, being a smart country, only takes people on merit). Maybe I'll destroy my passport, then when Immigration catches up with me after 6 months I'll claim asylum ('if you send me back to the UK they'll torture me with spin and tax me to death'). Or maybe I could copy that advert and when asked where I'm from, say 'Hawaii'

I was in NZ for a couple of months earlier this year - absolutely fantastic - ....

Your insurance needs will depend on what you plan to do -

If you are planning any "risk" type or "adrenalin" activities such as mountaineering / rock climbing / rafting /mtn biking/skiing / bungying / kayaking etc. etc - you may be better off getting insurance via a sports organisation than through conventional holiday insurance - where the additional costs for such "risks " can be extortionate or not included.

I insured through the B.M.C (British Mountaineering Council ) - where the insurance was much better value for these type of activities than other sources - the policy also covered the other risks such as theft / loss etc.

Nothing more dangerous than a helicopter flight over Mount Cook etc. And I may be bullied into going jet-boating; apparently they've never killed anyone yet But most of it will driving and walking.

Jet boating ...... there WAS a Japanese guy who was killed a year or two ago while riding a Jetboat on the Shotover - stuck his head out of the boat as it passed very close to a cliff -( very unpleasant for the others on the boat.....) - its generally safe though -

best value place to do jet boating is at Makarora (Wilkin jet boats ) , not that far from Queenstown ( where it is touristy and much more $$ ). the white water rafting down the shotover is great fun too (and pretty safe )
