I love watches before anybody says anything

I am at a total loss in this modern world why so many people on normal incomes buy luxury watches ,watches that they simply cant afford

I make good money purchased my house in 1988 and have been in business all my life

I still cant justify spending 10k on a watch ! Yet I know people here where I live in Devon on 30K a year and wearing Rolex and living in a rented house in my view its absolute madness. Only on Boxing Day a bus driver was up the pub with his right sleave up just so that everybody could see his Date Just !

what is going on here

Its up to you what you spend your money on but as a person who has done it I would advise investing to purchase a house and securing your family or future family should be the wisest course of action

What do I own

Casio Ediface burnt toast for working wear it most of the time
3 festina one black leather strap with black face £175 in Athens but looks very expensive !
Festina with Rolex type gold /steel strap and blue face this one look unique
Festina Steeel strap with another blue face
18 year old Citizen Eco Drive in steel and black face It goes on and on like an old Mec

What business is it of yours what people spend their money on?

Interesting collection. Why 3 Festina out if 5?

I suppose your house is full of Ikea furniture and you have a Skoda on the drive? What's the point in anything else?

(not being snobbish, I have plenty of Ikea stuff and only just sold my Skoda)

A expensive watch is man jewelry isn't it? That is something more than just functional. And why not? If they appreciate a watch more than a car go ahead, as long as they aren't putting themselves into unmanageable debt it's their money.

Why do you care where people spend their money? Very odd thread! Live and let live….

Im in disagreement with all of you

the same people wearing Rolex are on low salary's dont have a pot to piss in and pretend to be something they are not but maybe that's what its all about these days
Looking like a billionaire on Instagram and living in a council flat
In the old days I used to look at the wrist of potential customers and then I knew if they were good for their money these days they dont have any money if they have a "financed" watch
Genuine people with money no longer wear Rolex ect because they dont want to look like a chav

Perhaps more introspection and less interest in your perception of others would be good for you.

I enjoy seeing a nice watch no matter who's wearing it. You're being snobby.

If they are spending extravagantly whilst on the breadline, then perhaps it's fair to raise an eyebrow, but that's relevant to any expensive purchase.

I knew a guy in the 90s that lived in a two up two down with a Ferrari parked outside, car was worth more than his house, totally insane but it's his money.

I don't agree with that and Rolex have always (at least since the 80s, maybe longer than that) been a brand that people know is expensive and then buy when they think they have made it to show that they have made it (like Porsches). If you see a watch as a display of wealth it only makes sense to buy a watch that the general public have heard of - i.e. don't buy something only the cognoscenti recognise.
Buying a £10k watch when you have a salary only three times that seems like a poor financial decision and one I'm sure they will regret later, although I'm sure most in that bracket will be fakes.

As someone who doesn't own a watch at all, a Rolex such as a GMT Master 2 Pepsi is hardly a bad place to put £10k is it (not that you will actually be able to buy one)

If I was into watches and didn't have stupidly small wrists I would happily buy one. It's not as if you wouldn't be able to get your money back the same day if you decided to sell it.

It's something you can keep forever and it will most likely go up in value over the years.

I have spent way more on cars that have long since been sent to the scrapyard.

So I personally think it is a sensible thing to buy, other than the worry of having £10k on my wrist.

I will say however, it does seem like every other person you meet is wearing one. When I visit clients I can tell just by looking at them that they will be wearing one. It seems to be one part of the uniform for portraying to everyone that you are "successful"

No different from the Insta Generation financing to the hilt to afford a Lambo Urus....

Society is not the same as it was in the 70s, 80s, 90s.

But get a life and move on. Encompass modern trends or you will end up like Victor Meldrew.

A fair percentage of the luxury watches displayed on the average person's wrist are likely to be replicas. Having seen a superclone submariner side by side with a genuine watch they are indistinguishable from looks only.

I think we need a photo of your "very expensive" looking watch.
