MG XPower SV | PH Auction Block

Remember when MG set its sights on a V8 supercar?

History is littered with British sports cars. Big, small, fast, slow, affordable and expensive, we can’t get enough of two-door, two-seaters. Britain does it better than anyone. And actually there’s still plenty out there today, despite the doom and gloom, from Lotus Emira to Morgan Supersports and Ariel Atom to Caterham Seven. While there are no longer dozens of firms operating out of sheds, there’s still nowhere like Great Britain for driver-focused fun.

Don't believe that? Consider the controlled explosion of madness that is the XPower SV. It’s enjoyed a resurgence of interest lately with the MG Cyberster’s arrival, it being another fascinating chapter in the history of Morris Garages (or whatever it should be referred to as). The logic was simple enough, even sensible: above a newly rejuvenated MG range, with Z cars and the TF, would sit a thunderous V8 sports car. Great idea, back when people were buying such things. Only trouble being there wasn’t loads of cash available post-BMW so, as with the Z cars, the SV would have to be made from something that already existed.

The full story is explained very nicely by Cam in his video of driving one, but having bought Qvale, made a concept, had Peter Stevens redesign the concept and then sorted out where the carbon would come from, MG suddenly had an SV. You’ll remember there were grand plans for it, from Club Sport packages to nitrous, and at the time of TVR’s pomp it was all very exciting.

Alas, the SV was another great British sports car that wasn’t a commercial success; just 82 were built in total across the standard SV and more powerful SV-R variants. Bad news for MG at the time, given the effort it had gone to, but great news for collectors 20-odd years later. Because who wouldn’t want a V8, manual hot rod that’s super rare and looks like nothing else on the road?

Given the numbers made, and the fact that only really committed enthusiasts tend to own them, XPower SVs don’t come up for sale very often at all. Because what would you replace it with? This one is coming from just its second owner, for example, who’s had it since 2007 - 19 years at the end of this month, in fact. It’s covered just 15,000 miles since 2003, so its unmistakable bodywork has been almost perfectly preserved. The interior might not be quite so glamorous, but it’s also holding up well. Just don’t rely on the factory fit sat nav to get you anywhere…

This one’s being sold with a fresh MOT, some old receipts and a rorty exhaust that came with it out of the factory. There’s a huge amount of potential in an SV, surely, given the understressed nature of the engine, plus a huge amount of attention coming the way of the lucky bidder. There are much-loved V8 British sports cars out there, you see, and then there’s the MG XPower SV…

How have the engineers managed to get such a small number of horses out of a 4.6-litre V8? Kudos to them!

There's one going through ACA at the end of the month. Same age, but BRG in colour too. Guide is £38k!

I remember them featuring one on Top Gear, at the time I thought it looked pretty cool, sliding it's way from corner to corner. Now though, it unfortunately screams crashed into Halfords a bit doesn't it? I had to double check the wheel/gear knob/alloys were factory fit and not from the Rip Speed catalogue (pretty sure they are but hopefully got a bulk discount).

That said I'd still love to see one in person, they're a proper curiousity. Just as long as someone else is paying for it.

They used a mustang engine from the period of 3bhp/litre in the US.

Always liked the SV

Never understood the appeal of these. Awful things IMO.

I quite like the look of these but always thought the wheel fitment and ride height were off. The factory OZ wheels look wrong both in style and offset, and the styling suggests it was designed to sit perhaps 20-30mm lower than it does.

The car could have been/done so much more had we not lost Rover frown

Totally different seats, how strange. I wonder if you could specify when ordering.

‘Tyres are in great condition, having only covered approximately 500 miles since fitment’

500 miles ago was in 2010 - just shows how the auction write up can be spun and should be read with an open mind.

Rowan Atkinson had one from new, think he quite liked it, all i can remember was that the paint was pealing off around the grills on the front wings. Dont think he kept it very long.

To give them some credit, if you put the contemporary Audi V8 through the same life as a lot of the US V8s doing 3bhp/litre in their typical applications, you'd probably find it now put out around 0bhp/litre wink

Aaah, a proper Frankenstein monster. Made from bits from the parts bin, but surely powerful. I particularly like the fiat punto lights…

It certainly is different, and perhaps Marmite to some. Nevertheless it's a rare car and no doubt will fetch a fair price at auction.

Absolutely - on the looks and styling side of things, I can see:

AMG, Holden, Audi R8, RX-8, Fiat Coupe 20v, XKR…

A right MISH MASH…!!

But I quite like the OEM x Halfords vibe… I need help… :-))

I seem to recall Clarkson regaling us with the ‘fact’ that they could be bought in several states of tune, up to and including 1000bhp.
Personally I think it was marketing BS, a last hurrah from the sinking ship that was MGRover in a desperate attempt to get some money in (unless someone on here owns a1000bhp car that came like that from the factory?
If anyone would know, I’d suggest Dreadnought, north of Glasgow, might, as they did supercharged conversions on the MG ZT-T 260s which used the same engine iirc so could be a good place to start?
