on this:

here's a link to the advert

...it looks great, but i'm slightly worried about the mileage - I have a theory though that because it's essentially a family saloon motor and standard tune that it should be ok up to 150k plus miles..what do people think? worth a punt?

also short MOT so is this an issue? ie would it put people off? and why?

thanks in advance!

My advice would be pay £1000-£1500 for one with half the mileage I'm afraid.

Even if the car is A1, which it more than likely is because most things that wear out will have by now been replaced, its going to be a hell of a struggle trying to sell on an Elise thats done 100k

Car like thats future lies in a TT or Type R Conversion where a good rolling chassis and body is required.

A better prospect?

Motorway millage seems to have caused the volume of it so should not be a major concern.
MOT - How short is it. If its really short get the seller to get it re-MOT'd, prior to purchase.

I would suggest getting it inspected anyway, so both the above are redundent assuming the inspection returns a good bill of health on the car

For a couple of £k pounds more you could have mine with a year's MoT and a third of the mileage

www.pistonheads.com/sales/43879.htm

That said, Elises are essentially simple cars and there probably isn't that much to choose between one with 50k miles and one with 150k miles. Bushes, ball joints and brakes are all easy and cheap to sort, and engines are straightforward too.

Selling on might be difficult though and there are probably others around which are better value.

you lot having a laugh?

it's an absolute bargan, no messing.

90K miles is meaningless, so long as it's got a service history, there is no reason to worry about anything. only bit's that wear on them are all cheap and easy to change, and will affect *any* S1 by now.

go and shatch his hands off.

Chances are that car - like all the others - will have things that will need doing to it.

This isn't a problem, just as long as you recognise that in the first place and you have some cash or a flexible credit card on standby.

Have it checked over by a good specialist to check it's overall condition and to know what might need to be done over the next year (main wear and tear bits) and if all OK I'd go for it.

Like scuffham says - if it's straight, it's a bargain. As for resale, it's ripe for an engine conversion so I doubt its value's going to drop that much more.

Agreed. Offer him £7,500 or less if you can get away with it. Budget £500 for S2 suspension and £500 for other odds and sods and you've got yourself a one owner from new well looked after bargain. If I was looking I'd be very very keen...

Tom,

Spend the money on getting the mini sorted out and it may even be reliable - well for a couple of weeks anyway Oh and get a reliable 2nd car but not a VW.

Why would anyone be describing a car they are trying to sell as "drives ok"? That would have me a little worried. It's a Lotus Elise for goodness sake!

As others have said - you may well be looking to spend big bucks in the first few months to get it sorted.

Check steering rack, pads, disks, TREs, toe links, gators, suspension, etc, etc.. could be a money pit. Might be a bargain? You just need to get it well checked!

So much choice out there though.

Cheers

Agree, I think that's good value and as long as it's got a decent history file then the mileage shouldn't cause a problem. A full inspection is always worthwhile when buying one (Although I think it needs to be a Lotus specialist rather than the RAC!)

Thinking of selling mine at present - email me if you'd like full details.
Cheers,
Richard.

Totally agree. If I hadn't just spent all of my money I'd buy it to use instead of the 340 when it's raining!
