Result Japan transforms GT86 into AE86 homage

Initial D meets 2026 with incredible new bodykit - it debuts at the Tokyo show

Now this is what Japanese motor shows should be about. Nobody cares about mobility solutions and screens the width of the Tokyo Expressway. But a Toyota GT86 lovingly recreated as the original AE86? That we’re absolutely interested in. Especially as the bodykit is going to be sold; this is a product preview, not a one-off concept car…

It’s the work of Result Japan, an Osaka-based company which specialises in making properly lairy Toyotas (if its Instagram is anything to go by). And what it has made here is the Neo86 bodykit, an upgrade that will encourage buyers to ‘enjoy the ZN6 to the fullest.’ That’s the product code for the GT86, if you also didn’t know. And enjoy it they surely will, because this appears to be a beautifully done tribute.

The front end in particular looks great, with the pop up lights, flattened bonnet, black bumpers and yellow fogs. There’s a little bit of Celica ST185 to the Neo as well, and that’s certainly no bad thing. While the Initial D tribute act isn’t mandatory, from here it suits the 86 of the 2010s as well as the original of the 80s. Before anyone asks, they’re genuine Watanabe wheels. Of course they are.

The overhaul makes for a much wider, lower 86, cheeks now seriously puffed out like a proper tuner special. But with wheels brought out to meet the bodywork, a new rear spoiler to enhance the impression of width and the black sections, the Neo avoids appearing totally preposterous. Just a bit OTT in the best modified tradition. You’re never going to mistake it for standard, put it that way, even in a less recognisable colour scheme.

As far as can be told, Result Japan has left the 200hp boxer alone for the Neo86, which is understandable; they’ve had plenty to keep occupied with, after all, and you wouldn’t want a turbocharger or similar distracting from the amazing visual overhaul. Imagine it having to sit with the engine exposed after all that effort has been put into the bonnet. That being said, you’d surely crave a bit more power as an actual owner of a Neo86 like this, given how much wider the tracks and tyres now look. Imagine a GT86 that looks like an AE86 that you couldn’t skid - what would be the point?

Result Japan will give this bodykit its public debut at the Tokyo show later this week; even with Toyota’s latest and greatest also set to be shown, the Neo is surely going to be attracting plenty of attention. Pre orders will open at the same time. The news gets better, too, as the hope is that this will be available outside of Japan, too. In a recent Instagram post, Result said: ‘It is expected that it will soon be available for purchase not only in Japan but around the world.?’ What a sight on the A40 this would make. Just a shame, really, that used GT86s don’t seem to be getting any cheaper…

I know it's just a wide body kit, some stickers and pop up headlights... but the child in me likes it lots.

We need more retro-fitting of pop-up headlights on restomods ... although I imagine that's a challenge for IVA etc

I love the original and think this looks rubbish, it would be a boring place if we all liked the same thing.

But it's good when we can disagree without anyone being rude. beer

For me - if you took away the lettering/graphics on the side, that'd be perfect.

I think it looks great. How would this fare with a UK M.O.T station though?

Hate to say it (and as an owner of pip up lights as well!) but I really don't think they work on this. The front bumper, bonnet and lights really don't seem to fit the rest of the car.

I do like the rest of the kit though and its quite fun. Nice to see people doing things like this for these cars.

Nice to see such an option for the 86.

I agree with you Gary, this looks like a total turd...from the front at least.

American Japaniacs will go crazy for this based on the manga/anime connection to initial d. Euro people will probably be more ambivalent

I love that this exists, I think it looks great.

Sadly I doubt it would cope with the speed humps on UK roads.

Looks great. Fix the slightly droopy headlamp units, and swap in something a little more period in place of the standard rear lights and I'm all in.

I can see what they're going for, but it isn't working for me at all. Something about what look like old-style halogen headlights stuck onto a relatively modern body shape just looks really off. I'll take one of the originals thanks (and without the anime paintjob!)

Prefer the original, but fair play
