Due to moving commute will be around 65-70 miles a day so looking for suitable car suggestions.

Journey is part country roads, quite bumpy. Majority of the journey is dual carriageways.

Only needed for me and my partner. Must be automatic, apple carplay/android auto. We also do enjoy UK holidays so using the car for that. Max budget is around 20k. Ideally want to spend less.

Started looking at golf gtd mk7, just can't decide to look at diesels or EVs. I have no idea what fuel type to even look at. I would have ability to install a home charger.

I do exactly the same mileage and have bought a Mercedes E350 CDI coupe. It's perfect for the job, comfy, quiet and quick. Returns 38-40mpg. I looked at more expensive things but landed on an 78k mile example with FMBSH and 3 owners from new with a full MOT for £4800. The depreciation left in it will be fairly minimal and I really enjoy being in it.

The purely economic decision for the running costs would be an EV. If you can charge at home overnight on a low tariff the ‘fuel’ cost could be a fraction of even the most economical diesel.

I looked at c and e class diesels for something similar a few years ago. I bought a c250d estate.

Tbh it's a perfectly fine car however I regret not getting the e350.

Exactly this - more performance than you ever need, low NVH, negligible servicing costs and it is comically cheap (and convenient) to charge. 20k gives you a lot of options!

Just to expand on this:
65 miles a day x 20 workdays = 1,300 miles / month

In a diesel averaging 45mpg, that's 15p/mile or £188 a month in fuel
In an EV averaging 3 miles/kWh and overnight charging at 7p, that's 2p/mile or £30 a month in electricity.

So the EV saves over £150 a month just in fuel.

Plus it's quieter, gives instant torque, and probably has less to go wrong. And you don't have to take time out of your commute to go to a petrol station every other week. And it's pre-heated when you get into it early on a frosty morning.

I'd look at
Tesla Model 3 (although no carplay/AA)
Polestar 2
VW ID3 & 4
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Kia EV6

Model 3. Should get a long range Chinese built with ryzen chip for that.

Much roomier than the diesel golf, far more fun to drive, and another level performance wise, plus will be a lot more reliable than a VW. Boot is an awkward shape, which is only thing against it for holidays, and rear passengers won't like knees being high up compared to a MY.

Car play is supposedly coming in a future update, but tbh you won't need it, the tesla system is bloody good (even if it is annoying everything being on the touchscreen). Voice control is pretty decent though.

OP - can you charge it at work? If yes then an EV is a great plan, however if not maybe a plug in Hybrid is better.

Lexus ES is another option...

Yep, O/H does about 70 miles a day on her commute, part motorway, most cross country. Our i3s is ideal. Cheap as chips to run, range not ever a concern. We do have other options for the holiday car though, but they sit idle for days and weeks on end in reality.

Yet another vote for the Tesla Model 3 - I've got a 70 mile commute and it's perfect for it.

Cost is a third of what it was when I was running a hybrid/diesel (which were negligible cost difference between the two)

EV wise I'd suggest taking a good look at the Mach e, you'll get a nice 91kwh with the Pan Roof & some other nice options as well as a better built car:

77kwh EV6 GT Line:

78kwh Polestar:

73kwh Ioniq5 Ultimate represents the best value atm:

All the above are better cars than the Tesla but all are decent.
