You will all be aware of course of the winner of the Nobel peace prize this year: i.e. the IAEA and Mr Mohamed El Baradei.

You my not be aware though of New Zealands winner, a Mr James Watson, for his contribution, awarded by the "Annals of Improbable Research" for his dissertation: "The Significance of Mr Richard Buckley's Exploding Trousers"

Discuss at length, disseminate with gay abandon and formulate an hypotheses................

Of course, As a second choice, you may write out a dissertation on the work done by Adelaide Uni (gu'd onyer' blue) for their work in:

"painstakingly smelling and cataloguing the peculiar odours produced by 131 different species of frogs when feeling stressed"....er..the frogs...that is...stressed!.....

Fabulous!

My dear departed Uncle George used to be a farmer and when he finally was forced to leave his last farm he still had a stock of weedkiller...

My father, being a helpfpul and kind man, allowed my Uncle to keep his, now unused, farm machinery at his house (several acres) and also put his supplies of various agricultural chemicals, including the weedkiller, into his capacious garage.

Being ten I shortly found the bags of Sodium Chlorate.

Within days I had discovered its exploive properties.

Within weeks I was exploring its potential as a solid rocket fuel.

Imagine my father's surprise and delight when, on one November the 5th, I produced one of those industrial catering Nescafe Coffee tins filled with my special mixture (whose details had better not be revealed here!). I had a sparkler inserted into the top as a fuse which went down through a hold I'd punched in the lid.

Well I placed this thing out where the fireworks were and lit it up.

Ten seconds later I got a roman candle with a flame ten feet high (I kid you not) as the solid rocket fuel lit and burned. Several kilos of it in less than twenty seconds. MAGNIFICENT.

Little did I realise at the time that the "rocket fuel" could just as easily been "explosive" and showered the onlookers with shrapnel from the tin.

How shall I put it. It was explained to one precocious ten year old that such exploits of chemical prowess were never to be repeated.

Shame.

There was loads more raw material.

Oh my God! Where have you lot been all your lives?? You seriously expect me to believe that this is the first you've heard about the explosive qualities of sodium chlorate??

I was building pipe bombs out of motorcycle fork stanchions packed with a mix of this and sugar when I was 15 for Christ's sake!

Mind you, it's not as good as nitrogen tri-iodide (I'll provide the recipe if asked politely) which (when dry) could be placed under the edge of the lid of the teachers desk and then, when they dropped their things on it, would explode quite nicely with a small purple poof!

I saw a farmer's pocket go up in flames once, but not his whole trousers.

BTW it's easy to convert sodium chlorate into potassium chlorate, which gives more predictable results as it doesn't absorb moisture.
