4.7 S Sportshift 2 gear whine
Discussion
Have you driven a car (not specifically as Aston) with a single mass flywheel? At low RPM you get a chatter sort of sound. Would also be present in a higher gear if you were labouring the engine. If the car you drove had a twin plate clutch and lightened flywheel, it could be that.
Difficult to diagnose though, and obviously wouldn’t want it to be anything more sinister. Hopefully they’ll be a few more replies to help you out soon too.

Its not a rattle or clatter, its a whine which increases in pitch with engine rpm. A different frequency for each gear 1st and 2nd. Its quiet in other gears.Difficult to diagnose though, and obviously wouldn t want it to be anything more sinister. Hopefully they ll be a few more replies to help you out soon too.
Interesting you should bring this up. I'm starting to look into this on my Rapide. It almost sounds like a supercharger whine. While it could be the diff, the other candidates are the idler pulleys and belts at the front of the engine or the alternator. Other could be the oil pump was something I had read. I'm not sure yet though, but it doesn't seem to be major. Most likely and old bearing/pulley as it's aged, apparently quite cheap to fix. Personally I enjoy the sound.

Should hear just behind angry V12 noises a whine that increases with rev's that sounds like a supercharger.

It does not follow with engine rpm, different in 1st gear to second, and no noise in neutral. Definitely from the driveline.https://jumpshare.com/s/URPCbmATsVcvOArjSTYQ

Does sound a bit like a very quiet supercharger, but makes the noise both on and off throttle.

Test drove a Sportshift 2 S today (a late 2011 car), mid 40's mileage. Most things were fine, but the nagging issue was some whine in 1st and 2nd gear on the test drive. Not intrusive, but present. If you were in a traffic jam trickling along at 10-15mph its quite noticeable.
Is this the norm, or should it be quiet? Definitely sounded like gear noise - like very quiet straight cut gears would.
Thx

Have you specifically been looking for a Sportshift Vantage?
Users have spoken here about the gearchanges being a delight at higher speeds, but can sometimes be slightly awkward when manoeuvring, or when driving in stop/start traffic.
There have been reports that manual Vantages are achieving premiums, so presumably demand for those might now be greater.
I'm definitely after a Sportshift 2 or a Manual. The SS2 isnt bad in traffic compared to say a Maserati Cambiocorsa which is horribly lethargic to change. It's no DCT like in the McLaren, but it wasnt bad. My sole question is do they all whine? There are none for sale near me to try another.
Manuals are rare if you want an S. That said the biggest appeal of the S over the non as is the SS2 gearbox and on some, a few bits of carbon fibre.

The transaxles are the same for manual and Sportshift.
Whereas the manual has mechanical rods and levers to change gear, the Sportshift has an automated system for changing gears.
I expect you probably know this already.
I can tell you that my transaxle has never made any whining noise, so presumably your test car has a fault.
A separate issue is gear chatter, a scraping gravel sound heard occasionally at low revs. That is quite common and is caused by the uneven firing of the V8 engine, transmitting vibrations along the torque tube and making the gear teeth chatter. Slight acceleration will make that noise stop. It is not considered a wear issue.

Where abouts are you based? Maybe one of us is close enough for you to try ours.

Move on or be prepared for a gearbox rebuild in your future.
Which would be fine (except the huge cost) if the parts to rebuild the gearbox were available. The last I heard was that AML will not allow Graziano to sell gearbox internals to anyone except race teams so your only option is a new/exchange transaxle (which is probably on backorder). Walk away from any Vantage you have the slightest suspicion may have a gearbox issue would be my advice.

In the USA you can buy the individual gear clusters to rebuild the box with, but not in the UK.
Interesting. Is that because AML can't stop Graziano selling the parts in the USA or is a race team selling them on? Or is my information now out of date?Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
