Trump class battleship
Discussion
Interesting - ‘big’ gun surface ships, 10 to 25 in number. Pie in the sky?

How are drones going to get hundreds of miles out to sea, and what makes them better than missiles? Directed energy weapons will make light work of slow fragile drones let alone existing CIWS.Same with subs. What makes a sub with drones any more capable than a sub with torpedos?
Hypersonics are over rated. Blinded by their own plasma on the atmosphere, and not easy to manoeuvre towards a moving target.

Imagine how good a "drone" would be against a ship if it was long range, fast, stealthy and packed a big punch. We could call them missiles

They have a short development cycle because they are simple. That also makes them slow, short range and vulnerable.

Slow, cheap and short range. But in quantity.1,000 of them. With a couple of 'proper' missiles hiding among them.Imagine how good a "drone" would be against a ship if it was long range, fast, stealthy and packed a big punch. We could call them missiles

The term these days is One Way Attack Drones, and the difference between them and missiles didn't seem to be that big. The point is that they're cheap, they don't send one, they send dozens. Who wouldn't want a main battleship to play with, especially if you aren't personally picking up the tab?
tbf... it's pretty useful for the US. their primary use for all these things are big phallic bits of military kit to impose their will on weaker 3rd world countries so it's pretty much well in line with their usual modus operandi I suppose....Who wouldn't want a main battleship to play with, especially if you aren't personally picking up the tab?

How do they get close in the first place? Cheap means limited range, as does the reliance on fibre optics to avoid jamming. If they did get through what enables them to resist armour piercing rounds, or directed energy weapons?
Shahed drones have a range of about 2500km. yes they're slower and easier to shoot down than a supersonic missile, but for the cost of one Onyx, they can send dozens of Shaheds(edited for dumb autocorrect).

This isn't a politics thread.
I'll be interested to see the actual specifications before taking a view on its value.
Its just a distraction for Trump. Promise him a battleship with his name on it and that he can play designer and he's happy.I'll be interested to see the actual specifications before taking a view on its value.
Theres a reason nobody has battleships anymore, so I can't see any value. It actually looks more like a destroyer anyway.
