Rusty Brake discs?
Discussion
My Brothers 318ci has been outside the house for the last three weeks while he's been on holidays. I went to take it out for a refresher spin today and noticed the brakes were quite rusty. Nothing really unusual there as we live 20 meters from the sea and the discs rust up within 2 days anyway. However, when I drove the Beemer for a few minutes, there was incredibly bad grinding noises, and upon returning about 10 minutes later theres still rust rings on the discs.
Does it just need a good run or have they been left too long with irreperable damage? Can't imagine it being permanent, I've just never seen or heard that much rust on one of the cars.

I agree with an earlier poster, it needs an Italian tune up, about once a week. Don't go anywhere near a BMW main dealer or they wil change all the discs and pads and relieve you of several hundered pounds.

I agree. BMW tried to sting me for new discs and pads allround at a service six months ago. I have covered 5500 miles and 6 laps of the Nurburgring since then with no evidence of change needed.
To stop brake disc rotors rusting up while the car is parked up for a while is really simple. Just take a can of WD-40 and spray liberally on all the shiny part of the rotors. WD-40, as well as being a lubricant, repels water, so when you return, no rust.
This is more than a cosmetic vanity. I once left my Merc AMG SL55 for a couple of months while I went off to the Caribbean for a break, and when I got back the discs were so pitted from deep rust they had to be replaced. VERY expensive!
Of course as soon as you drive the car it burns all that WD-40 off the rotors and pads.
