F82 M4 Comp - Good choice?
Discussion
Hi folks, I've sold my 997.1 and am on the hunt for something a bit more modern with a bit more space in the rear (accommodate my 10 & 8 year old). I loved the 911 so finding a replacement is challenging.
It will be a second car so won't be used in the most extreme weathers and MPG not a factor. I'd like to be able to take the 3 of us on road trips a couple times a year in some comfort as well as enjoy the turn of pace when on my own. I'd like it to feel a bit special regardless of speed as well.
I was circling an M2 Comp but have been drawn to the slightly larger M4 Comp in part due to wider colour choices (I am a sucker for the blues - particularly Yas Marina) and the added practicality. The noise worries me as reports are it's poor - I do like a decent engine note if possible.
Opening it up here for pros and cons as well as alternatives. I've looked online at Lexus RCF, B8 RS4 and various C63's. I could be swayed by a 4.0 coupe C63 I think. A 6.2 would be a great find but they seem quite difficult to source a non abused example, and the interior is getting on a bit.
Budget in the 25-35k range, the nearer the middle the better.

I have an F83 (so convertible) M4 and it’s my only car. It does this job rather well, as it’s comfortable enough on the commute, and is fun to drive when the opportunity arises. I can also get my two young children in there without issue. Halo to answer any questions about it if you have any.
Would I choose it as a weekend car/toy? Probably not: it’s not enough of an “event” for me (though this may be due to it being my daily). To be honest, I suspect your previous 911 may feel more special to drive.
I’ve always fancied an XKR as a weekend car, though couldn’t comment on space for children.
I guess it depends on what sort of “second car” you want: the M4 will handle B roads with aplomb, but won’t be much of an event (in my opinion). A C63 is more of an event, but isn’t as sharp to drive (again, in my opinion). Either way, having a convertible automatically improves a “fun” car!
Nice quandary to have though!

The M4 is a very good option & a good steer, with your budget you'll easily get a nice comp:

Owned an F82, sandwiched by a 6.2 and 4.0 C63s, albeit estates. The engines do not compare. The V8s are full of character and drama, the M4 was OK. The noise I recall the most was the tyre noise inside the cabin from the 285 section 20in tyres.
I bought it new in 2019 and was torn between the M2 Comp and the M4 Comp but they were the same price due to >£20k discount on the M4 Comp and it came in San Marino blue which is stunning when clean, and swayed it for, that and the nicer and roomier interior.
The M4 Comp was more fun to drive and great fun on track, its turn in was excellent and didn't need anymore power.
Coincidentally, Facebook reminded me that six years ago today, I collected it from BMW. Miss that car.

I've had my 2018 F82 M4(none CP) for 5 years next year and 45k miles now. It's used as a daily, and I still love it. I've got a couple of kids and the rear seats work fine for example.
My only niggles are the harsh ride(but I'm 52 though, so it's maybe just my age really), and the noise it makes. I don't hate the noise it makes, but I wouldn't say that it is all that inspiring though. I personally think they're a fantastic all round car though, and I'll find it difficult to replace if and when the time comes I reckon.

I bought a 2018 F82 M4 Competition 6 months ago off a close friend who was about to chop it in for a New M4 G82. I had no intention on buying a M4 but just after a chat at the pub I agreed to take it off him instead of it going as a PX! He had it from new so knew the car well.
It’s a really lovely car. Mines Sakhir Orange II with the Icon 2 Adaptive headlights (a must have in my opinion make the car look so much meaner!). Also has Harman Kardon speakers and HUD which are definitely options to look out for. Amazingly they didn’t come with Reverse Cameras as standard and this is something mine is missing and I wish it had as they are long cars.
I use mine daily, mainly around town. The ride is harsh even in comfort but what do you expect from a M4. The DCT gearbox is pretty clunky when cold, and nowhere near as refined as a DSG/PDK in my opinion but once again not a dealbreaker for me.
They are known to use a bit of oil, I burn about 1L/3000 miles. The turbo seals and Valve Stem seals are known to fail on them, one way to check this is once warmed up leave the car to idle for a good 5-10 minutes and give it a good rev at idle, if you get a big puff of smoke run!

It is funny that you mention that, and mine has always gone 2 years between the oil services without needing any oil adding whatsoever, and it's always stayed on the max level. However this week it did actually ask me to add 1 litre though, so I'm now starting to think that it is the beginning of the end for the car(and for me now really), because I can't be arsed to run needy cars after 6 years with a TVR for example). I can't grumble though to be fair, because I've had it almost 5 years and 45k miles without any trouble with it at all though(apart from the windscreen washers packing up, plus the rear diff hasn't ever leaked either which I think is a fairly common fault with them for example).
Four proper seats, special, 30k : Maserati Granturismo.
You’d get a nice facelift ZF boxed 4.7 eg

Don’t give up on her yet! Just monitor how long it takes before asking for another litre, if it does become a more common occurrence it maybe time for turbos. This can be done by specialists for £2k all in so a fairly pricey job but once done the S55 has proven to be a pretty bulletproof engine. Then again you read of cars covering over 100k miles still on original turbos and not using a drop of oil! Are you using 0W30 oil? BMW put this in but a lot of forums suggest going up to a 5W30 as the car gets older, and this turns to burn less.

Yeah and I still love the car thanks. I put 5W30 in it, but I don't have a clue what beemer put in it though, because I still go to the main dealer to get it serviced. Are you using 0W30 oil? I've bolded the boxes a Mustang ticks. Go for a 2017 plate on the cheaper tax (pre-facelift) and it's hard to argue with. Slightly more risky recommendation is a 2+2 Evora. More fun to drive/roadtrip, but loses out on a few points. Both are cars I'd take over an M2 or M4.
Thanks for all the opinions!
M4 still leading the way if I can find the right spec (ideally Yas Marina with the light interior, LCI and some kind of stereo upgrade). I’m digging in to other options as well and do like the HUD. Prices are all over the place which is off putting though.
Of the other options:
- Granturismo - love these but do worry they will hit me with the brutal combo of high running cost and depreciation. Would love to be told I’m wrong though. Originally an early 4.2 was what I was after but seemed like a big risk at 20k-ish. Later car might be safer though.
- Mustang - great suggestion and would be a manual which as a second car is good! I’d like to have a play in one to see if I get on with it. Again they are spec dependant as there’s a really underwhelming silver one in my street - dark green for me please! Do they drive well?
- Quadrifoglio - it’s on my list to test if one appears locally but I do prefer the interior of the BMW. Appearance can be a bit underwhelming depending on spec as I had a poke around a black one and wasn’t blown away.
- Lexus - ruled out after serious consideration, can’t quite gel with it.
- C63 - like these but for me they are very spec sensitive. If I can find one locally I’d test it. 4.0 is the nicer car but the draw of the 6.2 is huge, would want to be lower range of budget on a 6.2 though as it’s an older car.
- Audis probably a no unless it’s a B8 RS4
I’ve got a cheap BMW i3 for shops and boring commutes / bad weather. Would want this car to be usable for weekend trips, ferrying kids to activities and pottering/commuting on nice days etc so it is sort of daily-ish that I’m after.
Want to try to get in and out without losing my shirt over a couple of years - if I were to upgrade the i3 in time I’d swap this car for another 911, or an R8.
Plenty to think about though - thank you.
Hope everyone has a good Christmas!

I sold my 997.1 4S in April intending to replace it with a 981 GT4, that never quite went to plan and I needed a car for a pre booked euro trip
Reluctantly bought an F82 M4 comp as it offered the best value for money and ticked the boxes.
As standard I hated it, I didn’t really enjoy the drive home from Somerset to Aberdeen and thought I’d made a big mistake. The suspension geometry was out but I knew it was all being changed once I got the car home so overlooked it. With that all changed it’s a fabulous car and I don’t miss the 911.
Genuinely it blew me away how good it was after some minor tweaks, aftermarket suspension, geometry, and fitting 19” 437 wheels. On our euro trip it was terrific, and more fun than I had the previous year in the 911
It doesn’t look like a comp given the wheels, I prefer the look and drive of it on the 19” 437s but that’s a personal choice
The plan with the M4 was to do the euro trip and sell it, It was advertised but didn’t get much genuine interest so it’s now in storage until I decide what to do. There is another trip planned for 2026 and taking it back won’t be the worst choice

I had a 997.1 as a weekend toy back in the day. It was a manual Carrera S and I absolutely loved it. Sure it lacked a bit of specialness ( I find German cars struggle in that dept for me ) but it did everything so well.
I moved into supercars a bit later and got myself a yas marina, manual M4 as a semi-special daily. It did the daily stuff so we'll but at no point did I ever enjoy driving it on a good road. For me (I know opinions on noise can be subjective) it just sounded rubbish. I normally always modify exhausts on my cars but the last thing I wanted was the M4 to be any louder. The issue is the unequal header length for the two separate sets of three cylinders, before the meet the turbo. Some companies have created an equal length exhaust to turn fix the problem but it has never been solved, as you'd need to make the header length equal... Nothing you do after turbos will fix the sound.
The other issue was the rear axle is so unsettled unless you are on the smoothest tarmac, on the warmest day. I think the only time I ever enjoyed driving it was when we took the kids to Disneyland and drove there. It was summer, on France's smooth roads and could actually put my boot into it. Every other time, the rear axle would skip and hop, then the traction control would come in like an anvil, cutting most of the power (even in MDM mode) it was so frustrating.
Long story short, I bought myself an E90 M3 manual the other day. Proper engine, decent chassis. Goes down the road so much better than the F82 ever did. I've noticed a big difference in build quality/ interior materials too. It will no doubt cost more to run than the M4 (the M4 never gave me any issues) but then all good things come at price I suppose.
Please take your time in deciding what you get. Try get some extended time behind the wheel, especially in this current weather, on your favourite roads to see what you think of it
Some else previously has mentioned a Mustang. If I were you, I'd be considering this. Interior quality will be a step done after the 997.1 but everything else will be awesome. If a Mach 1 is in budget, get one of those. They have the Tremec gearbox which apparently is the best one to have.
Good luck in your search.
Dylan.

I do get what you mean with that, but that is also one of the things that I like the most about it though. I like how edgy it is if you know what I mean? It will no doubt cost more to run than the M4 (the M4 never gave me any issues) but then all good things come at price I suppose.
Please take your time in deciding what you get. Try get some extended time behind the wheel, especially in this current weather, on your favourite roads to see what you think of it
Some else previously has mentioned a Mustang. If I were you, I'd be considering this. Interior quality will be a step done after the 997.1 but everything else will be awesome. If a Mach 1 is in budget, get one of those. They have the Tremec gearbox which apparently is the best one to have.
Good luck in your search.
Dylan.
I've never noticed mine cutting the power in MDM, and it let's me light the tyres up completely in that mode. It does cut it back a fair bit with traction fully on though in comparison.
I've had a manual E92 M3 as well, and they both get down the road in a similar manner for me, in the dry anyway.
