A pleasant way to spend the winter fettling this back to road going condition , is the estimate a bit on the high side ?

Unbelievable mileage that's for sure.

Looks like the mileage maybe true, no mot history and untaxed since 1983 ! I had one exaclty the same colour but a later version with brembo brakes .

I really like those factory smoky edged paint jobs.

A choice of fairings too for sporty looks or touring duties.

That’s a lot work to change that over .

Why would you? That was a turd back then. I get classic bikes, I really do. I’ve got a few, one or 2 that might not be recognised as bona fide classics. But a geriatric stbox that nearly brought BMW down until they released the K series confused

Though wasn't it the case they had to resurrect the Boxer because of the relative failure of the K?

You’re suggesting the K was a turd too wink

Reality is that the old boxer was an aran jumper and werthers kind of IAM bike. Completely outclassed by the opposition. I have memories in the late 1980’s following the BMW boys down Town Hill outside Pietermaritzburg, watching the boxer stuff flex so badly they ended up in the ditch while the NS was so stable I could do long division in my head. Dreadful things.

The K series was a brave attempt to modernise. It had its issues. That said, the K1 was an unmitigated turd in a shell suit bought by the very few deluded types who thought it could match an FZR or GSXR….

BMW modernised massively into a brand making desirable bikes although a question mark remains over quality. But the1970’s stuff was just dreadful ste.

Or those who just plain liked it wink

I think it could be a great buy based on its mileage and ownership and could see it making £4k plus.

The traditional bmw owners favoured the flat twins, in the same way harley reinvented the big twins .

I'm heading to that auction. Day out with a couple of my mates, though I do have my eye on a couple of things.

I thought they were meant to be plodding reliable bikes hence why the police ended up with them?
There was a bike dealers in March Cambridgeshire who bought the old police bikes and he said they would come in with 60,000 miles on them and just need a set of piston rings and was good to go again.
I never liked them as they wasn’t really what us lot wanted. We either went Jap or British

They were , i had an r65 then a r100cs and a r100rs , frames were powdercoated from new and weathered well to a degree most bike owners today can only dream of , in the days when wd40 was the go to for winter protection .

All seals cracked and perished, tank rusted etc etc.

Pitted engine casting?

Whats the providence on the mileage?

Totally believable mileage given that its been stored since 1983 , zoom into those pics and it looks in fantastic condition just barn dirt , obviously there will be hidden issues with seals and fuel system.
