Is buying a Euro 5 car still good, as we head into 2026? South U.K. based, dont commute to work.
Do sometimes go into Reading / Newbury - currently neither have an emissions charge. Very rarely London.

I bought an early Euro5 Discovery Sport on purpose because it was the older 2.2d engine rather than Ingenium.

Euro 5 is less complex, although will still have a DPF.

Doesnt bother me at all. Ironically, the Euro6 diesel I own still gets billed the ULEZ charge because TFL are wkers and can't seem to deal with private plates.

TFL do not or will not pay for access to DVLA.

If your plate has been transferred from a non compliant car you need to contact them or they will just keep billing you.

Check every diesel before dismissing it on Euro Status,

My mates 2008 Astra he has run for years came up compliant.
My 2007 C220 cdi comes up compliant, I know of many other examples.

And there are plenty of others that have paid crooked TFL staff to alter records.

It's a lottery, check everything.

As a general rule, Euro 6 diesels tend to be a little more refined than Euro 5 ones, ie a particular model's previous generation vs current.

If its a JLR product, the 2.2D isn't that refined in a transverse configuration (eg RR Evoque or Disco Sport) but its okay in a Jag XF; but the 2.0 Ingenium diesel is so problematic it should be on anyone's "avoid" list.

On JLR I would choose reliability over refinement any day.
