2013 R57 Mini Cooper S Hesitation & Misfire
Discussion
I have a 2013 R57 Mini Cooper S with the N18 engine. Has 55K on it. Always been regularly serviced with oil changes done every 7K ish or less.
I have 2 symptoms:
1. When pulling away immediately after a cold start, it hesitates slightly.
2. Sometimes at a hot idle in traffic, the revs drop slightly and it appears to misfire a little.
No engine codes logged on Bimmerlink.
Looking for likely causes, carbon build up on the valves, High pressure fuel pump, or an air leak seem possible causes.
So:
1. Do these engines generally need a decoke at 55K? Google says 50 to 70K is the window when they tend to need it
2. Is this a likely cause of the issue?
3. Are there any other likely causes
Thank you.

AFAIK they DO need a decoke/walnut blast & 70k is normal, although the effects can be discerned before then.
You can obviously check yourself for metered air leaks yourself to rule that out first.
If there are no visible issues it could be worth booking it in for a walnut blast & get them to do a compression check at the same time along with a new set of plugs if they haven't been changed for a while.

Yes, I was thinking 55K seems low for a decoke, especially since it has always had very frequent oil changes - longest ever oil change was the first one and that was only 9615 miles, the rest are all quite a bit lower.
Is there a trusted/recommended mini specialist in NE Hants I could take it too? I'm generally very hands on (used to be fairly well known on the C5 RS6 forums) but I'm not trying to make the mini a project car, I have other projects I'd rather work on.

I'm am sure if I didn't service it enough that coking and timing chain wear would be worse. And I find the condition based indicator suggesting up 22K miles between services is bonkers
Anyway, easy to find lots of places on google that'll just plug it in, look for error codes and tell me I need to regass the aircon (the only error it currently has), but was hoping for some recommendations of people that really "know" these cars. On my old C5 RS6, there were only a couple of places in the country, so I made the effort to learn the ins and outs of the cars myself and wrote many How To guides, but trying to avoid making the mini a project, I already have a proper project car that needs some love.
