Where to find a decent 928?
Discussion
Depends if you are set on RHD? LHD means you can always sell it again easier on the continent being a that the resale pool is way larger

I had the same problem looking for mine, there is a real mix of cars out there and prices are all over the place depending on what the sellers think they're worth so picking a good one at a reasonable price is very difficult.
In the end I contacted the 928 Register Secretary of the PCGB and asked him if he could make any suggestions. He very kindly emailed all the registered owners he had to advise that someone was looking to buy and passed on the details of the 25 or so people that responded. I ended up filtering the cars I was interested in down to about 6 and went to look at a few after speaking to the owners. I was very open to which model and age car I was looking for and prioritised condition, history and provenance above everything else so I think that helped.
Eventually I whittled my choice down to a choice of 3 cars, 2 of which were S4s and one S1. The car I eventually bought is a 1980 S1 auto that was professionally inspected before completing the purchase so I was very aware of what I was getting into and have a list of mostly minor things that need fixing or updating which was priced in with the seller.
I've had the car a little over a month now and although it's not been driven too much so far I really like it and it feels much more modern that you would think for a 45 year old. Some of the minor jobs have been done and more will get done over the winter and early spring so it's in good shape for a lot of use next year.
I have to say that all the owners I spoke to via PCGB were enthusiastic, polite, helpful and very encouraging in helping to find the right car for me and I'm extremely grateful for all of the pointers and guidance they offered.
So if my experience is anything to go by, there are some really good cars out there but not all of them are being actively advertised and if you find a good candidate get it inspected so your going in eyes wide open.
If you have any questions or need any further information please let me know.

Speak to Paul Anderson here:
https://www.928specialists.co.uk/
You need to get to know him anyway - I don't trust anyone else.
He has a great network of 928 owners and may know of someone selling.
Hope that helps!

This. It's how I bought my first one. No frills from Paul, but straight talking and will say he can either help or not. And he knows most decent 928s in the UK.https://www.928specialists.co.uk/

The email forum is a bit old fashioned but the wealth of knowledge is impressive.
Good chance that someone will be selling and the register tend to be real enthusiasts, who look after their cars
I agree, a call to Paul Anderson might yield results.

Had a similar problem when I looked to replace my S4 a few years ago. RHD markets are UK. HK, Japan, South Africa and Australia/New Zealand.
There are quite a few good ones in Aus, but they tend to be expensive esp if Aus-delivered. I did what’s being suggested here - talk to a few local specialists and let it be known you’re in the market. Also go to a few classic car meets and see what’s there.
And good luck - they are awesome things!

A family member has a fairly spotless S4 with 19k miles which I've driven a few times - it's auto. No issues with the box at all, in fact I think it suits the V8 engine and nature of the car - it was produced and essentially marketed as a GT car so for that kind of effortless long distance driving, it's perfect. That's not to say it's not involving, and I'm not knocking the manual 928s which people optioned - but I think the likes of the 911 of that era was a car that suited the manual box more than a 928.
They are great cars, not without their quirks, but I still look at them and marvel at how well they've aged given the initial design concept came around in the early 70s, with the first prototype built in 1973 (although the final car didn't officially debut until 1977 due to external factors). Not many designs over 50yrs old still manage to look as unique and futuristic looking even amongst all the cars that have come out since then. Whilst I like the 944, 968 etc and they clearly have familial design cues, the 928 just had something special about it.

Sure, 928@porscheclubgb.com
There was one GTS I was made aware of but decided it was too much of a compromise on what I wanted so didn't pursue it.
i'm just waiting for them to come through now.
this is a lovely colour

Can I ask who inspected it? Finding someone familiar with these cars is proving difficult...If you have any questions or need any further information please let me know.
