Quatermass and the Pit

Bought this from Amazon yesterday, with a view to watching this weekend.
I am genuinely apprehensive, because the only thing I remember was that, as a small kid, it terrified me.

I suspect that you'll be more inclined to laugh, than be terrified these days. I watched a couple of scenes online a year or two back, and it has, undurprisingly, aged.

After going back and re-reading my post, it did not come out as I wanted. I realise I wont be "terrified", but am interested to see just how it has aged.

When they're carrying the 'martian creature' prop, one of it's bits falls off, but they adlib and keep filming.
It is still a good film, despite some of the effects being a bit 'of their time'

Is it the original (B&W series) or the slightly later remake? They're both great but the remake manages to be that little bit creepier somehow. They've both aged well imo, technical aspects aside of course.

I'd love to see a modern Quatermass too (assuming they didn't fk it up, which is a big assumption)

maybe a little on the nose, but you're not wrong in principle since I suspect any 'reimagining' would lose the 'Britishness' of the originals

It is strange, we have (NetFlix especially) foreign series which are lauded for showcasing their culture and yet (outside of bodice-rippers or Downton) Englishness seems to be either sneered at or bundled up as American-lite

I can see it now, the modern remake would have Lenny Henry as Quatermass, ethnic minorities and women in major roles of authority like scientists, politicians, senior police officers, doctors, soldiers, while the native Brits will fill the roles of mute forelock tugging drones.

One of those films I end up watching when it's on telly somewhere. Yes, the effects are creaky but it's second to none for creating that creepy, spooky air of menace. Particularly the scene in the abandoned building, accomplished with nothing more than a few scratches on the wall and a creaking door.

And it's got Barbara Shelley.
