EV not any time soon and possibly never

I understand the attraction of an EV to others but I’m just not interested.

I’ve driven a few hybrid hire cars and been quite underwhelmed and in one case ( Nissan cash cow) told the rental place they needed to swap it for something not terrible.

I’ve not driven a full EV yet and tbh have no interest in trying one, it’s not an anti EV thing I just don’t like the way cars are going in general with irritating driver aids and pointlessly large screens, I even got rid of my Cupra Formentor Vz2 for an older Macan as the lack of physical buttons had become irritating.

I’m hoping to stay in an ice only car for at least another 10-15 years.

Anyone else kinda feeling this or am I just mad?

Weird thread. Your issue seems to be with new cars in general, not EVs (which you've not even driven).

However, I'm completely with you on the driver aids and lack of buttons on new cars in general. There's a good chance my 2024 car will be replaced with a >2020 one.

I know what you mean with regards to new cars in general. I've got a Renault hire car at the moment and it's absolutely infuriating to drive - it just constantly 'bongs' and attempts to take over the steering at the slightest hint of approaching a white line. My next car will probably be from 2018 - 2020, I think that's when cars peaked.

I was like you but test drove a Tesla and bought a new one a month later. It's very no pressure if you go to a dealer and ask for a test drive, they let you go off on your own for a bit, maybe worth a try to see if you like it.

Its a free country, you can buy whatever car you want. For the time being.

My personal view is... it depends. I'm not 'interested' per se in run of the mill EVs, that said I don't care about boring hatchbacks and saloons with 4 cylinder engines either.

Your view is one shared by many many people.

I own two cars from 2006 - the most modern I own. If anything they have too much tech.

I would genuinely make it a year in prison for driving a car with any touch screen fitted - utterly insane that it is legal.

Cars from 2006 veer on the too long, too wide, too tall and too heavy side and things have gone nuts in the 19 years since.

I cannot get my head around how a website called "pistonheads" has so many users who seem to be better suited to "boringeconomiccommutercar.com"

I feel the same as the OP after 25 years of getting a new car every 2 years on average I've given up, although I do like the Neue klasse BMW and think the saloon version one will be good.

I didn't want one as there wasn't one that could replace my Disco Sport as a car for transporting the dog around (flat boot, near vertical bootlid, 4x4) but now I see there's a Defender Sport on the way and the Q6 looks tempting so if I wasn't in the process of buying a house now might be the time I swap...

Me too!

Hate petrol stations, hate the fact that every petrol pump is smeered in fuel. Hate shopping around for cheap fuel. Hate queuing up for the pumps, queuing up to pay, waiting for the dhead in front to stop adjusting his mirrors, seat, seat belt, wallet, radio before pulling away....

Electric cars... Silent, every morning 150 miles of range, remote pre conditioning, cheap electric tariffs, mega performance...

Also, love modern cars. Automatic emergency braking, decent voice control, hands free phone, music streaming, automatic cruise control, auto wipers and lights, modern NVH, outrageously safe, reliable, varied....

So you've driven a crap hybrid but not an EV and decided on this basis, you don't want a EV. Isn't that a bit like eating a rotten apple and deciding you don't like pears?

I'd class myself as a petrolhead but my garage currently consists of 2 EVs because they're just better for what I need right now.

Exactly. I've also driven a hybrid Qashqai as a hire car and can confirm it's fking awful, but then that was me coming from a Focus ST so it's all relative. They obviously can't be that bad as you see them everywhere, but then most people don't really care or understand about driving dynamics, and if you're swapping for a newer model then it will have a newer more modern feel to it which is all people care about.

At the moment I'm in a Megane E-Tech, so not exactly the most dynamic of EV's on the market, but it's light years ahead of the hybrid Qashqai, so I'm not really sure why the OP is making any sort of comparison between hybrids and EV's...

Sometimes it's possible to know that something is really not for you, without having to try it in order to confirm this. Examples might include cave-diving, injecting heroin, or homosexuality.
